Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, beat the Hartford Wolf Pack 2-1 Saturday in their final home game of the 2005-06 regular season. The win cut the Sound Tigers' magic number to two points gained by them or lost by the Binghamton Senators to clinch a berth in the AHL's Calder Cup Playoffs. Binghamton beat the Rochester Americans 6-5 at home Saturday.
Joe Tallari put the Sound Tigers up 1-0 when he scored his first goal of the season 12:02 into the opening frame with assists from Chris Barr and Ryan O'Marra. The assists marked Barr's first career AHL point and the first pro helper for O'Marra who now has points in four of five games as a Sound Tiger.
Hartford tied the game at 1-1 with 4:13 left to play in the first period when Martin Sonneberg notched his 14th tally of the year off feeds from Lee Falardeau and Marvin Degon.
The Sound Tigers took a 2-1 lead at 3:48 of the middle frame when Peter Tsimikalis notched his third marker of his career with help from Tallari and Evgeny Tunik. Tallari slipped a feed from behind the net to Tsimikalis who was busting down the slot on the play.
The Wolf Pack outshot the Sound Tigers 11-4 in the third period and pulled goaltender Al Montoya in favor of an attacker with just over a minute left to play but could not score.
Sound Tigers netminder Wade Dubielewicz made 30 saves to earn the first star of the game, Tallari was the second star with two points and Tsimikalis was the third with the game-winning goal. Montoya finished with 14 saves as Hartford had a 31-16 shots on goal advantage. Both teams were 0 for 4 on the power play.
The Sound Tigers will visit the Portland Pirates tomorrow, Sunday, April 9th at 4:05 p.m., and finish the regular season with a pair of road games next weekend versus the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Friday, April 14th at 7:05 p.m. and versus the Wolf Pack in Hartford next Saturday, April 15th at 7 p.m.
