Hampton Roads celebs produce score-fest at Scope

NORFOLK, VA - In the Admirals' inaugural Celebrity Hockey Game to benefit the American Cancer Society, a slew of local personalities produced 12 goals, as they skated to a 6-6 tie before the Admirals' game later that evening. The Admirals donated a portion of the proceeds from tickets sold for this special game to the American Cancer Society's "Relay For Life".

The celebrities comprised two teams, Hampton Roads "Radio and Friends" and "TV and Friends", and played three 10-minute periods.

The "Radio and Friends" team included local personalities: FM99 WNOR's Rick Rumble and Jason "The Show Stopper", 96X WROX's Mike Powers and Bob Fresh, 106.9 The Fox's Dave Taylor, 97.3 The Eagle's Diane Letterman, former Hampton Roads Admiral Dennis McEwen, Admirals' PA Announcer Don Bolger, Eric Bartok of Merrill Lynch, with Norfolk's Sheriff Robert McCabe in goal. Additionally, actor/comedian Harland Williams, of such films as "There's Something About Mary", "Dumb and Dumber", and "Down Periscope", made a special appearance on the team's roster.

The "TV and Friends" squad included: WVEC TV-13's LaSalle Blanks and Craig Moeller, WTKR TV-3's Troy Brettson, Mike Mather and Giovanna Bechard, former Hampton Roads Admiral Rod Taylor, the Admirals' Director of Operations Todd McKeating, Norfolk Fire and Rescue's Lt. Wayne Oporto and Glen Williams, with Norfolk City Councilman Randy Wright between the pipes.

Tommy Griffiths of FM99 WNOR and Cindy Crawford of 92.9 The Wave served as emcee's for the contest. Officials for the game included the Admirals' color commentator Pat Shetler as referee, Greg Tozcek and Laurie Wood of the Norfolk Sheriff's Office as linesmen and Bob Batcher of the City of Norfolk as penalty box official.

The "TV and Friends" team took a 2-1 lead after one period, but the "Radio and Friends" team rallied to tie the game at 3-3 after the second frame. Both squads scored thrice in the third stanza for a 6-6 final score.
