Portland, Maine - Tyler Weiman made 37 saves to lead the Lowell Lock Monsters (28-35-5-7) to a 2-1 victory over the Portland Pirates (49-19-5-3) at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night. Keith Aucoin established a new Lowell single season record with his 78th point of the season.
The first period from Portland was scoreless. Lowell G Tyler Weiman stopped all 10 shots he faced in the period. Jani Hurme turned aside all nine Lowell shots in the Portland cage during the first. The season series has been a tight battle between the two, with the Monsters holding a 3-3-0-2 record and the goal scoring even at 26-26 coming into play tonight.
Lowell pushed in front during the second period with a pair of tallies to finally light the lamp. At 6:29 of the frame, Blue Bennefield snapped home his second of the season to make it 1-0. Cody McLeod and Tomas Slovak assisted on the tally. Aucoin made the record his by helping set up linemate Kevin Estrada later in the period. Estrada's tally, his second in as many games, came with just 2:48 remaining in the second stanza and gave Aucoin 52 helpers on the year - also a new team record - and 78 points. Weiman made an additional 11 saves in the period to hold Portland scoreless.
Aucoin had a chance to add to his record total early in the third, but Hurme denied him on a one-timer just over six minutes in. Just moments later the Pirates got on the board, on a play off a face-off in the Lowell zone. Zenon Konopka recorded his 18th of the season by redirecting it past Weiman at 7:07. But it's as close as Portland could get. The Monsters backstop withstood the Portland attack, as the Pirates outshot Lowell 16-5 in the final period to hold on for the win.
Lowell continues their road swing when they head to Hartford for a 4:05 p.m. match Sunday afternoon with the Wolf Pack. Both games can be heard live on 980 WCAP, and viewed through B2 Networks, the official broadband provider of the AHL, with the "Voice of the Lock Monsters" Ryan Johnston.
