Wildcatters power play sinks Lynx on Saturday, 5-2
March 15, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Fueled by 11 power plays including four power play goals, the Texas Wildcatters broke a 2-2 tie heading into the 3rd period with three goals to defeat the Augusta Lynx 5-2 Saturday night in Beaumont, Texas. For the Lynx, it ended their brief two-game winning streak. The Lynx once again, came out playing a solid road game.
The Wildcatters got on the board first thanks to a freak goal on the power play. As Texas dumped the puck in the Lynx zone, goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert went to stop the puck behind the net. A couple feet before the puck reached Goepfert, it redirected off a uneven crease in the dasher boards and popped directly out front for John McNabb to deposit into the empty net. The Lynx struck back however with a goal from #17 Anthony Battaglia. On the play McNabb hit #22 Shane Hynes from behind and the Lynx took advantage of the delayed penalty as #2 Jason Platt and #27 Nick Toneys kept the play alive to get the puck to Battaglia on the left wing for the goal. McNabb was given a game misconduct for his hit on Hynes. The Wildcatters struck back during the Lynx power play, as a turnover at the Texas blueline led to a 2 on 1 from Dan Welch who sniped a drive over the glove of Goepfert for a 2-1 lead. But, just :38 seconds later #9 Louis Goulet took the puck coast to coast and scored on a backhander to tie the score at 2-2 at the end of the 1st period.
The 2nd period was dominated by special teams play with the two teams unable to score during a combined 15 power plays through the first two periods. However, with the Lynx in the box to start the 3rd period, the Wildcatters took advantage with Welch's 2nd goal of the night as a drive from the point bounced off two players to Welch who beat a diving Goepfert. The best chance for the Lynx to tie was off the stick of Battaglia, who was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked from behind on a 2 on 1, but Battaglia's drive couldn't beat goaltender Kris Tebbs to the blocker side.
The last four penalties of the game and all the penalties in the 3rd period came against the Lynx and the Wildcatters made them pay with two more power play goals from Kevin Baker and Scott Champagne.
Augusta finished 1 for 7 on the power play, while Texas was 4 for 11.
