Trenton Devils News Release

DAYTON, OH (March 15, 2008) - The Devils' playoff chances are officially revived. Joe Rooney became the first Trenton skater to secure a four-point night on the road since 2001, pacing the Devils to a 4-1 victory over the Dayton Bombers.

Trenton moves to within seven points of the Bombers for the fifth and final playoff spot in the ECHL's North Division.

Rooney set up the Devils' first tally of the night, a Matt Cohen one-timer, with less than minutes to go in the first period and did not look back. The Boston College alum secured three assists and a goal in the win.

Jason Smith had yet another outstanding night in net, stopping 26 shots. The netminder's bid for the record books was stopped ten minutes into the third period, when Gary Klapkowski snuck a puck into the far-side of the net in a scrum.

Smith's shutout streak ended at 186 minutes and 27 seconds. If he had held on, he would have become just the fourth ECHL netminder to have three consecutive shutouts.

The game-winning goal was also the fastest Trenton marker to open a period this season. Tony Zancanaro raced into the attacking zone on the transition with Trevor Kell and Joe Rooney before settling in front of the net and deflecting a Kell goal line blast into the cage.

Rooney himself made it 3-0 nine minutes later with his twelfth goal of the season, giving Trenton its second power play goal of the night.

An empty-netter by Kell sealed the deal with 46 seconds left, icing the game and handing Rooney his first four-point night of his professional career.

The Devils and Bombers square off one last time this season; Trenton has nine games left to play, while Dayton has eleven remaining.

The Trenton Devils return home to Sovereign Bank Arena riding a three-game winning streak to face the Wheeling Nailers on Thursday, March 20 at 7:00pm. It is College Fair Night, where New York Life will be giving out chances to win dorm room prizes while students and fans can meet with local colleges and universities.
