Chiefs Shut Out By Jackals
March 15, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs were shut out 3-0 Saturday night at the War Memorial Arena. The Chiefs only had 14 players suit up for the game. The Chiefs lacked firepower and speed as they lose what could be an important game in the ECHL playoff picture.
The Chiefs made an early mistake in the first when Brian Deeth committed a cross-checking penalty at 4:36. The Jackals were unable to capitalize. The Chiefs had two power play opportunities at 7:59 and 10:10. Greg Gallagher missed a shot off the post, and later Mark Tobin had a wide open net and failed to score. The Elmira Jackals managed to score the first and only goal of the period at 13:13 on a Bruce Watson wrist shot. Assisting were Chris Busby and Maxime Lincourt. Johnstown out-shot Elmira 11-9 in the first period.
The Jackals would take advantage of an early power play in the second period. Elmira's Busby scored at 3:03. The goal was set up by Bobby Robins and Brett Pilkington. Coach Ian Herbers decided to pull Andrew Penner in favor of Ryan Nie following Elmira's second goal. Elmira would add a goal with nine seconds left in the second period when Luke Fritshaw was able to sneak the puck past Nie. The Jackals would led 3-0 after two.
The Chiefs would be unable to score in the third period leading to their first shutout at home since November 30. Nie would hold the Jackals scoreless in the third. The Jackals out-shot the Chiefs 24-23. Elmira went 1-6 on power play opportunities; Johnstown went 0-7.
Andrew Penner took the loss in net making 8 saves on 10 chances, while Nie went 13-for-14 in relief. Elmira's goalie Ervins Mustukovs was perfect going 23 for 23 in save opportunities.
