Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 15, 2008)-A pair of goals from Jeff Miles and Mac Faulkner proved not to be enough as the Inferno (28-26-4-6, 66 points) fell to the visiting Gwinnett Gladiators (39-19-2-3, 83 points) 7-4 on Saturday night.
The Gladiators took a 1-0 lead 6:42 into the game when Matt Anderson parked in front of goalie Todd Ford and deflected Andy Brandt's shot into the net. Guillaume Desbiens made it a 2-0 lead at 13:38 when he raced down the far side and backhanded the puck over Ford's shoulder, off the crossbar, off Ford's back and into the net. Tomas Pospisil finished the Gladiators' offensive outburst in the opening period when he beat Ford's blocker side with a heavy wrister at 18:41.
Miles trimmed the deficit to 3-1 when he camped out on the far goal line and sent a low shot/pass through the crease, off goalie Craig Kowalski's skates, and into the net at 4:38 of the second period. Anderson reclaimed the three-goal lead when he finished a tic-tac-toe play from Brandt and Chad Painchaud, flipping the puck into the empty net on Ford's blocker side at 6:42 of the second. Faulkner netted his first of the night at 7:46 of the second when he poked a Liam Huculak rebound past Kowalski to make the game 4-2 in favor of Gwinnett. The Gladiators then built a 6-2 lead on goals from Painchaud, at 11:22 in a near-replica of Anderson's second goal, and Jeff Campbell at 16:02 with a blocker-side shot from the mid-slot.
Miles netted his second of the night at 6:21 of the final frame when he shook his defenders and beat Kowalski to trim the Glads' lead to 6-3. Faulkner further breathed life into the Inferno's comeback bid when, at 11:03 and on the power play, he slammed a Jeremy Schenderling pass through the crease past Kowalski to make the score 6-4. Brandt iced the game for the Gladiators when he scored another well-executed passing play from Painchaud and Anderson at 13:03.
Kowalski finished with 27 saves on 31 shots, while Ford stopped 23 of 27.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Wednesday, March 19 to host the Pensacola Ice Pilots at 7:05 p.m.
