Washington Wild Things News Release

Normal, IL-It was a battle between two southpaws as Washington's pitcher Kyle Helisek, who was making his second start of the young season, battled pitch for pitch against Normal's starter Kevin Brahney. In the end, the Cornbelters halted the threat of a Wild Things comeback as the home team edged the visitors 4-3 at the Corn Crib Saturday.

Early in the contest, the Cornbelters middle of the lineup gave Normal a 2-0 advantage in the first inning.

In the fourth inning, the Wild Things trimmed the deficit 2-1. Third baseman CJ Beatty led off the frame with a double and later came around to score on a RBI groundout by first baseman Lee Orr.

Solid pitching and defensive play by both teams halted the scoring until the seventh inning when Normal's left fielder Cameron Monger scored on a wild pitch. The Cornbelters added on another run in the seventh, this time in the form of an Aaron Dudley RBI single to go ahead 4-1.

However, in the top of the eighth Beatty's lumber ignited the spark for a Wild Things comeback as he belted his first homerun of the 2015 season. The two-run shot by Beatty made it a one-run game, 4-3, but, the Wild Things were unable to complete the comeback and the Cornbelters bullpen held on for the victory.

The Wild Things and Normal will play the final game of their weekend series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 EDT at The Corn Crib. Fans can listen to all the action with Randy Gore on WJPA 95.3 FM and/or follow live game updates on Twitter @washwildthings.
