Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (May 23, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners dropped a 4-0 decision on Saturday night at Rent One Park to the Rockford Aviators, clinching just their third series loss at home in the last two calendar years.
In the first inning against starter Ryan Brockett (0-1), Tanner Witt hit a solo home run to left to give the Aviators a lead they would not give up. Rockford would score again in the third, when after a Mason Morioka walk and a Michael Hur double, Witt grounded out to second to bring home the second run of the game.
The Miners' bats were shut down for a second consecutive night by the Aviators' pitching staff. Kyle Hassna (2-0) did the deed on Saturday, as Southern Illinois could not get a serious rally going. The closest the Miners came to scoring was in the fourth inning. Frank Martinez led off with a single and Michael Earley, after falling behind in the count 0-2 worked a walk in a 10-pitch at-bat. But the next three were retired by Hassna to end the inning.
Brockett settled down and pitched a quality start, giving up six hits and just the two runs in six innings with four strikeouts in his first professional start and Miners debut, but it was not enough as the Miners dropped to 5-3 on the season.
They will start Rick Teasley in the series finale to try and salvage the weekend against Rockford's Kyle Allen, with first pitch in Marion at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday evening.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
