Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, scored early and added two unearned runs late to capture their second straight win, a 4-3 victory over the Washington Wild Things on Saturday night at the Corn Crib.
The CornBelters wasted little time resuming their offense as they scored twice in the first inning. Cameron Monger led off with a single followed by a walk to Mark Micowski, with Monger scoring on a Pat McKenna base hit and Micowski coming home on a fielder's choice grounder by Sam Judah.
The Wild Things countered in the fourth inning when C.J. Beatty led off with a double, was balked to third and scored on a fielder's choice ground out by Lee Orr to cut the Belters lead to 2-1.
The Belters gained some insurance in the seventh when Monger reached via error with one out, stole second, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch to build the lead to 3-1. The Belters added another unearned run in the frame when McKenna walked and came home two singles later with the RBI credited to Aaron Dudley.
Washington erased the insurance with a two-run homer inside the right field pole by C.J. Beatty with two outs in the eighth inning.
Kevin Brahney (2-0) worked six innings for the win, giving up four hits and one run with one walk and four strikeouts. Kyle Helisek (1-1) took the loss. Kevin Jefferis pitched the final three innings and earned his first save.
The series and home stand conclude with a 3:05 p.m. first pitch on Sunday as the CornBelters send right-hander Kevin Jefferis (1-0, 0.00 ERA) while the Wild Things counter with lefty Tim Flight (0-0, 5.40). Clown Prince of Baseball Myron Noodleman appears on Heartland Bank and Trust Family Fun Day including post-game autographs. Pre-game on WEZC-FM 95.9 and WJBC.com begins at 2:50.
