
Big Inning Topples Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, made a valiant comeback but could not overcome the Lake Erie Crushers in a 12-8 defeat.
Lake Erie opened a 9-1 lead by scoring six runs in the top of the third and three in the fourth. Schaumburg battled back, scoring in four consecutive frames. Michael Valadez doubled home two in the fourth and newcomer Steve Rogers singled in a run to make the score 9-4. Down 11-4, Schaumburg scored four unanswered to battle within 11-8. Alexi Colon doubled home a run in the sixth while a couple errors led to two more.
The teams combined for 30 hits. Eight of the nine hitters in the Schaumburg lineup posted at least one. Leadoff man Mike Schulze finished with four hits, falling a homer shy of the cycle. Ryan Tuntland, Valadez, and Rogers logged two hits each with Valadez driving in a pair. Anthony Gomez allowed seven runs in five innings of work, suffering the loss. Hideyoshi Otake tossed a season high three innings in relief and did not allow a run while Evan Boyd struck out the side in the ninth.
The Boomers (5-4) conclude the Memorial Day weekend series with Lake Erie on Sunday night with a special 6:30 p.m. start.
