
Bats Come Alive in Slammers Big Win

Joliet, IL - The Joliet Slammers (4-4) put out their biggest offensive performance of the season behind a huge night by the middle of their order, on their way to a 14-5 win over the Gateway Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies got on the board early scoring in the first inning off pitcher Andrew Strenge. DH Madison Beaird reached on a leadoff double. With one out SS Rolando Gomez singled to right and Beaird motored around third, trying to score on the base knock. RF Nate Roberts throw to home came up short, and Beaird scored putting Gateway up 1-0.
The Slammers answered with a run in the second inning. DH Russell Moldenhauer led off with a single and moved to second on a 3B Mike Garza base knock. SS Alfredo Rodriguez followed with a single of his own, driving in Garza and tying the game.
Joliet added runs in the third and fourth innings as well. RF Nate Roberts drove in Charlie White in the third and Rodriguez knocked in Garza in the fourth. The Grizzlies scored one in the top of the fourth, making the score 3-2 Slammers after four innings.
The Slammers added three more runs in the fifth behind the bat of Garza. With two outs, 1B Chris Serritella walked and DH Russell Moldenhauer singled. With a pair aboard, Garza corked a three-run homer over the right field fence, giving the Slammers a 6-2 lead.
Gateway responded with a pair in the sixth on a two-run homer by CF Blake Brown. Joliet answer with two scores of their own in the bottom of the inning. Catcher Dante Rosenberg was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, LF Phil Bates and 2B Max Casper walked. White drove in Rosenberg with a sacrifice fly and an error by the catcher allowed Bates to score. The Slammers led 8-4 after the sixth.
The Slammers padded their lead in the seventh in with two more scores. With pitcher David Murillo in, Garza smoked a double to right field for his fourth hit of the game. Rodriguez walked, and moved to second on a Rosenberg sacrifice fly to deep center. After Bates reached with a base on balls, Casper cracked a single to center, scoring Garza and Rodriguez to put Joliet up 10-4 after the seventh inning.
Joliet broke the game open in the eighth. Garza was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring the first run of the inning. Moldenhauer scored on a pass ball and Garza came in on a fielder's choice. The Slammers would score four runs in the inning, taking a 14-4 lead. Gateway came back with a run in the ninth before the Kevin McNorton close the door, with the final score 14-5. Garza earned the Merchants and Manufacturers Player of the Game title with a four hits including a three-run home run.
Notes: Joliet is now 4-1 at Silver Cross Field...Mike Garza has a hit in each of his last five official at bats....Garza records the first four-hit game for the Slammers this season... Joliet's four and five hitters combined for seven hits in the game...Their middle three hitters went 9-for-11...Russell Moldenhauer has a seven-game hitting streak... Joliet has scored 11 runs in the last two eighth innings combined...The Slammers 12 runs is a season high... Their 13 hits is also a season high... Alfredo Rodriguez notched his first multi-hit game of the year...
