Wild Things Beat Miners in Series Finale, 6-3

Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, won the final game of their series against the Southern Illinois Miners, 6-3.
A pitching battle ensued until the top of the third inning, when Southern Illinois put the first run of the game on the board. A double by shortstop Jake Kaase allowed left fielder Darian Sandford to score.
Washington responded with a pair of doubles in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. A double by second baseman Shain Stoner drove in center fielder Robbie Garvey to tie the game, and Stoner scored the go-ahead run when left fielder Doug Thennis hit a double of his own. Thennis had a strong night at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two walks, a double, and a triple. Thennis also made some incredible plays in left field that kept his team in the game early.
The Wild Things added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run home run by catcher Joel Carranza. Third baseman Nick Lockwood squeezed in pinch runner Allen Boyer in the sixth inning to take a strong 5-1 lead.
Washington shortstop Michael Mooney scored in the bottom of the seventh inning, on a wild pitch by Southern Illinois reliever Anthony Collazo. The Miners attempted to close the gap in the top of the eighth inning, with Kaase hitting a two-run home run to cut his team's deficit in half, 6-3. But the Wild Things' defense held strong and did not allow the Miners to earn another run.
Washington starting pitcher Eric Blackwell spent 5 2/3 innings on the mound and allowed one unearned run on three hits. Blackwell walked three batters and struck out one. Reliever Steven Grife pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on two hits, while walking one and striking out three.
Miners' starter Shawn Gilblair lasted six innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits. Gilblair walked one and struck out two. Anthony Collazo pitched one inning in relief and allowed one earned run on no hits. Collazo struck out one and walked two.
The Wild Things begin a three-game series at home against the Normal CornBelters tomorrow night.
