Rockford RiverHawks News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - With only one save chance for their closer so far this year, the Rockford RiverHawks hadn't been able to utilize Mike Lee as initially planned. On Thursday, they decided to go to the closer early - first pitch early.
Lee got the start and combined with piggyback partner Cody Hallahan to end the RiverHawks' four-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over Traverse City at Wuerfel Park.
Matt Greener drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning as the RiverHawks ended Traverse City's four-game winning streak.
The Beach Bums took the first two games of the three-game series largely because of 22 walks issued by Rockford pitching. Lee and Hallahan combined to limit the Bums to five walks and eight hits. Lee walked two in the first inning and gave up a run on Jeff Flagg's two-out bloop single to right field. Lee struck out four - he has a team-high 18 strikeouts despite his normal role - walked three and scattered four hits over four innings. Hallahan, who had been the scheduled starter, took over to start the fifth inning and was awarded the win because Lee didn't go five innings. Hallahan (1-1) struck out five, walked two and scattered four hits over five scoreless innings to finish the game.
Traverse City starter Jacob Clem struck out five and scattered three hits over seven innings, but took the loss. Clem (1-2) walked three, including Evan Button and Jet Butler to begin the fourth inning. Clem attempted to pick Button off second, but threw wildly into center field. Clem struck out the next two hitters after the error, but Greener drilled a 1-2 pitch to the left-field corner to put Rockford in front.
The RiverHawks added two unearned runs in the eighth inning.
Rockford ended a six-game road losing streak with its first visiting victory since May 19 at River City.
The RiverHawks are home at 7:05 p.m. Friday to take on Southern Illinois. OSF St. Anthony sponsors postgame fireworks.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league in its 20th season. Games are broadcast on WNTA-FM (100.5) Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
