Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (10-7) @ WINDY CITY THUNDERBOLTS (10-5)

Thursday, June 7 - 7:05 p.m. CT

Standard Bank Stadium - Crestwood, IL

Game #18 - Road Game #9 (10-7), (5-3)

RHP #47 Jeremy Tietze (0-1, 6.89 ERA) vs. RHP #34 Stephen Sauer (1-0, 2.00 ERA)

Last time out...

David Fox lined a two-out, two-RBI single in the top of the ninth and the Joliet Slammers (10-7) knocked off the Windy City ThunderBolts (10-5) by a final score of 5-3 Wednesday night. It was the first time all season that Windy City had lost at home. Steven Maxwell battled through six innings, giving up three runs on six hits while hitting three batters and walking one. Maxwell tallied five strike outs in the no-decision. Daniel Carela tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to pick up his second victory of the season while Amalio Diaz notched his fifth save for the Slammers. With the win Joliet pulled to within two games of the first place River City Rascals in the West Division. The game also featured Erik Lis' first home run of the season as he hit a solo shot in the third inning to tie the game at one. A rare two-RBI sacrifice fly gave Joliet a 3-2 lead in the fifth off the bat of Hector Pellot.

For Starters...

Jeremy Tietze is coming off his best start of the season on May 31 as he went six and a third innings in a no-decision against the Lake Erie Crushers in a game the Slammers would eventually win. Tietze struck out five batters and only surrendered three hits and two runs in the outing. Tietze started his professional career in 2011 with the Slammers in the bullpen but pitched so well the team moved him to the starting rotation near the end of the season. He finished the regular season with a 7-1 record in 32 appearances, three of them starts. Then in the postseason he went 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in two starts. The Slammers won both his outings in the playoffs.

So we meet again...

The Slammers faced off against Stephen Sauer, tonight's starter for Windy City, in the season opener in Crestwood back on May 17. The right-hander went 5.2 innings, scattering eight hits and giving up two runs in a no-decision. The Slammers would eventually fall by a score of 4-2.

Abel is able...

Abel Nieves can play anywhere in the field. He's already played left field, right field, third base, shortstop and second base this season. Nieves can also hit. He's currently either first or tied for first on the Slammers in batting average (.410), runs (13), hits (25), total bases (31), OBP (.507) and OPS (1.015).

Winning...

Since a 1-5 start, the Slammers have a record of 9-2.

Playing the long ball...

DH and Hitting Coach Erik Lis hit his first home run of the season last night. He hit a team-leading 20 for the Slammers in 2011.

Second to one...

The Slammers rank second in the Frontier League in team batting average (.271) and ERA (2.80). The only team with a better ERA than the Slammers is tonight's opponent: the Windy City ThunderBolts (2.60).

No hits allowed...

The Slammers pitching staff has held opponents to a .213 batting average, the lowest in the league.

Movin' on up!

RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, May 21. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.

Transaction Wire...

The Slammers placed RHP Michael Perconte on the 7-Day DL yesterday and transferred catcher Trey Manz to the 14-Day DL. They signed RHP Seth Hobbs.
