Iowa charged out of the gates, claiming a 1-0 lead at 6:46 of the opening frame. Forwards Brett Bulmer and Zack Phillips converged on an Admirals defender behind the Milwaukee net. Bulmer came away with the puck and jammed in the rebound from his wraparound attempt. Bulmer's 11th goal of the season started Iowa's first-period scoring. The Wild cashed in on the team's second power play of the night, taking a 2-0 lead at 11:08. Winger Tyler Graovac slipped a pass from the half-wall to Brad Winchester, who was parked low in the corner. Winchester snapped a cross-ice pass to Zack Phillips, who rifled a one-timer past goalie Marek Mazanec for his 11th goal of the season. Just over two minutes later, the club made it a 3-0 lead at 13:35. Defenseman Tyler Cuma snapped a pass from the left point to the right-wing circle for Kris Foucault. The Iowa forward immediately fired a pass to the left-wing side of the crease. Forward Stephane Veilleux tucked the pass into the back of the Milwaukee net for his fifth goal of the season and a three-goal lead through the first period of play.

The Admirals connected for the lone goal of the second period, getting on the scoreboard at 9:04 of the middle frame. Mikka Salomaki picked up a hard rim in the left-wing Iowa corner and snapped the puck to the net. Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson was moving back into position when the puck snuck past him on the short side. Forward Austin Watson and defenseman Scott Ford each had an assist on Salomaki's 15th goal of the year.

Nearly halfway through the third period, Milwaukee's Joe Piskula ripped a slapshot past Gustafsson at 8:01 of the final frame. Center Calle Jarnkrok won a faceoff back to the blueline for Piskula, who blasted his third goal of the season into the Iowa net, trimming the deficit to 3-2.
