St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - Buoyed by a four-goal second-period outburst, including two from J.C. Lipon, the St. John's IceCaps pounded the Portland Pirates 5-1 Wednesday night at Mile One Centre to extend their win streak to nine.
Andrew Gordon, Jerome Samson, and Jason Jaffray each scored one and added an assist for the IceCaps, who also extend their consecutive points streak to 10 games with the win. Adam Lowry had a pair of assists.
Michael Hutchinson was strong between the pipes for St. John's, meanwhile, stopping 27-of-28 for his 15th win.
After a scoreless first period, Gordon put the IceCaps ahead 1-0 just over five minutes into the second. Pressuring in the Pirates' zone, Gordon threw the puck out in front from behind the net - attempting to set up Jaffray - before it deflected off a Portland player and into the back of the net.
Lipon extended the IceCaps' lead to two at 6:54, when he notched his seventh of the season. On a tic-tac-toe play on the rush, Jaffray fed the outlet pass to Lowry in the neutral zone, who carried it across the blue line before setting up Lipon in the circle. Lipon then made no mistake, wristing it into the top-right corner to make it 2-0.
With St. John's on the power play midway through the frame, Samson potted his 20th of the season to put the IceCaps up by three at 9:48. After Mark Visentin made the pad save on Will O'Neill's blast from the point, Samson pounced on the loose biscuit off the end boards and shovelled it stick side.
Then, just a minute later, the IceCaps scored a quick one right off the faceoff to make it 4-0. Winning the draw clean in the Portland zone, Lipon picked up the puck and wasted no time in snapping it blocker side past Visentin.
In the final frame, the Pirates cut the deficit to three 34 seconds in when Mathieu Brodeur trailed the rush and wristed a loose puck it over the glove of Hutchinson to make it 4-1.
St. John's restored their four-goal lead at 8:43, however, on a goal from Jaffray on the man advantage. Finishing off a heads-up passing play, Jaffray took the feed from Patrice Cormier before corralling the puck in front of the goal and backhanding it top shelf, staking the IceCaps to a 5-1 lead, as they finished strong to earn the victory.
The IceCaps look to win their 10th straight when they battle the Pirates again Friday night (7:30 p.m. NT) at Mile One Centre, in the second of their three-game series. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers on Rogers TV, www.stjohnsicecaps.com and 930 AM, or watch online at www.ahllive.com. Pregame show gets underway a half-hour before puck drop.
