Whitmore to Phantoms, Newbury to Hershey

The Adirondack Phantoms have announced today that they have received forward Derek Whitmore on loan from the Hershey Bears, and that forward Kris Newbury has been loaned to Hershey by the Philadelphia Flyers.

Whitmore, 29, has scored 4-5-9 in 26 games with Hershey this season and is on a one-year AHL contract with the Bears. The Rochester, NY native is in his sixth career professional season having previously played with Portland, Rochester, St. John's and Hershey in the AHL and also having appeared in two NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres in 2011-12. He has played in 351 career AHL games and has scored 90-71-161 with 103 penalty minutes. He began this season scoring a shorthanded goal against Adirondack on October 5, 2013 at Giant Center in the Phantoms' season-opening overtime win.

One of Whitmore's best seasons came in the 2011-12 campaign when he scored 28-16-44 for the Rochester Americans leading the team in goals and earning AHL Performance of the Month honors for November. He posted a four-goal game on November 26, 2011 in a 5-3 Rochester victory over Hamilton. He also scored 27-20-47 for the Portland Pirates in 2011-12.

The product of Bowling Green State University in northwest Ohio led the Falcons in scoring in his senior campaign with 27-10-37 in 2007-08.

Whimore is also known for his contributions to the community having been selected as his team's IOA/American Specialty Man of the Year honor in three consecutive seasons for Portland and Rochester in 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12.

Newbury, 32, departs the Phantoms having scored 14-22-34 this season. The 11th year pro from Brampton, Ontario also played in four NHL games with Philadelphia notching one assist and recording seven penalty minutes. On December 21st, the veteran forward played in his 700th career professional game at the Norfolk Admirals. He appeared in his 600th career AHL game earlier this season as well on October 25. Newbury has scored 4-6-10 in 76 career NHL games with Philadelphia, the New York Rangers, Detroit and Toronto.

The Phantoms continue their stretch of road games this weekend traveling on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to Hartford, Hershey and Bridgeport. Adirondack's next home games are Saturday, March 22 and Sunday March 23 at 5:00. The March 22 game is Firefighters Appreciation Night and the March 23 game is a Sunday Family FunDay featuring a postgame skate with the Phantoms players.
