South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- The South Carolina Stingrays fired a season-high 45 shots on goal, but Cincinnati goaltender Brandon Whitney stole the show, earning the Cyclones a 4-2 road victory at the North Charleston Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. The Stingrays win-streak of four games was snapped in the loss despite a pair of goals from Colin Mulvey.
The tone was set early in the first period by Whitney. The 6-foot-5 netminder turned aside 19 South Carolina shots in the game's opening period. At the other end of the ice, despite only firing six shots, the Cyclones were able to find the back of the net. Forward Zach Budish scored his 11th goal of the season at 17:17 from a sharp angle. Camped along the right wing boards, Budish snapped a shot that quickly hit the back of the net and popped out. The officials signaled goal, and Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Mulvey, a former Cyclone, was able to solve Whitney early in the second period on the power play. Forward Brett Cameron fired a slap shot from the right side towards the Cincinnati net. Mulvey was stationed in front of Whitney and redirected the puck past the goaltender's pad for his seventh goal of the season at 3:09.
Nick Huard would break the 1-1 tie for the Cyclones at 18:48 of the second period. Just as a power play had expired, Riley Weselowski took a slap shot from the point. Huard tipped the shot between the pads of South Carolina goaltender Branden Komm for his 10th goal of the season to make it 2-1.
Whitney continued his strong play in the third period, but the Stingrays were awarded a power play as Huard took a delay of game penalty. Instead of a tying goal via the power play for the Stingrays, it was the Cyclones who would score shorthanded. Andrew Yogan beat Cameron to a loose puck and raced in on a breakaway. He deked around Komm and scored at 14:03 to make it 3-1.
Mulvey would knock a rebound past Whitney at 19:14 to cut the lead to 3-2, but after a timeout by South Carolina, the Cyclones promptly scored into the empty net off the faceoff. Cody Carlson notched the goal with an assist from Yogan to make it 4-2.
The Stingrays outshot the Cyclones 45-28 and went 1-for-6 on the power play. The Cyclones were 0-for-3 on the power play. Komm suffered his first loss of the season and fell to 6-1-0-0.
South Carolina hits the road next weekend, visiting Adirondack for a pair of games Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. before heading to Reading for a 4:00 p.m. puck drop on Sunday. All games can be viewed at the Watch Party Home of the Stingrays, King Street Grille-Northwoods. The Stingrays are back home on Saturday, January 16 and Sunday, January 17 versus Alaska.
