Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV - For the second week in a row, the Wheeling Nailers had a second period go the way of the opposing team in a Sunday afternoon game. Trailing 2-1 on a couple of tallies by Anton Zlobin, the Norfolk Admirals filled the net with four goals in the middle frame, building a 5-2 lead, before eventually skating away with a 5-3 victory at WesBanco Arena.

The Nailers took the first shot of the game, but Norfolk stormed right back in the opposite direction, putting three pucks on goal, with the third one ultimately finding its way in. Tommy Mele and Steven Whitney had their shots denied, but Whitney grabbed the rebound of his attempt, lifting it in at the 26-second mark of the contest. Wheeling rallied with two goals in a span of 1:16 at the end of the frame, taking a lead into the intermission. The first tally was the result of a cluster of bodies in the slot. Massimo Lamacchia poked a loose puck to Anton Zlobin, whose backhander glided over the line. Zlobin was responsible for the second goal as well, as he ripped a wrist shot from the left circle, which flew into the right side of the cage.

The second period was a different story for the home team - one it would like to forget. Jonathan Lessard brought the Admirals even at the 58-second mark, when he finished off a 2-on-1 rush with Michael Pelech. Norfolk then took its second lead of the tilt shortly before the midway point, when Devin Mantha flung a wrist shot through Franky Palazzese's legs. Lessard's second of the period extended the advantage to two, when he waltzed in with a curl-and-drag move, which resulted in a goal in the top-left corner. Scott Allen's redirection on the power play put the Admirals ahead 5-2, before Matia Marcantuoni picked the top-right corner from the slot, pulling the Nailers within two.

Norfolk tightened up its defense in the third period, limiting Wheeling to just seven shots on goal, preserving the 5-3 win, as neither team was able to find the back of the net.

Ty Rimmer backstopped his fourth straight win in goal for the Admirals, turning away 23 of the 26 shots he faced. Franky Palazzese suffered the loss for the Nailers, making 33 saves on 38 shots.

The Nailers will continue their seven-game homestand with three more games at WesBanco Arena next weekend. Friday night, The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas present Flat Screen Friday, and that evening will also be a Frosty Friday, as Wheeling hosts the Orlando Solar Bears at 7:35. Orlando will be the opposition for Saturday night's 7:35 match as well on Princesses & Pirates Night. Princesses and pirates from popular movies will be on hand for pictures, and fans can register for a pregame dinner through the Nailers office. In addition, the first 2,000 fans will receive a Winter Cheer Scarf from WesBanco Bank, and Saturday will be the annual Girl Scout Night.
