Wheeling Nailers News Release
Just Like Old Times
The Wheeling Nailers took the ice in vintage Wheeling Thunderbirds uniforms on Saturday night in front of the third largest crowd of the season, as 3,846 fans made their way to WesBanco Arena. Wheeling did its predecessors proud, lighting the lamp five times in a 5-1 victory over the Brampton Beast. Jarrett Burton netted the first two goals of the evening, scoring in the first and second periods, while Tim Hall extended the lead to three with his first goal as a Nailer. In the third period, the home team tacked on two more markers, thanks to back-to-back power play tallies by Anton Zlobin and Connor Leen, which were separated by just 32 seconds. Jeff Brown foiled the shutout bid for Franky Palazzese, who finished the night with 26 saves for his ninth win of the campaign.
They Just Needed to Get Home
The Norfolk Admirals closed out the 2015 calendar year with four staight games on the road, as they visited the South Carolina Stingrays and Atlanta Gladiators. However, they were only able to come away from that trip with one point in the standings, thanks to an overtime loss to the Gladiators on Wednesday. Norfolk returned home on Saturday for a quick re-match with Atlanta, and the home cooking of Norfolk Scope Arena proved to be a helping hand. After falling behind twice, the Admirals rallied to draw even, before Samuel Noreau snapped a 2-2 tie with 17:06 left in the third period. Ty Rimmer stopped 33 of 35 shots to preserve the triumph, which was Norfolk's second in a row on home ice. Alexis Loiseau and Jonathan Lessard also dented the twine.
Way to Go, Bros
The opening goal of Saturday night's game featured a unique connection for the Nailers, as Jarrett Burton scored his 12th marker of the season, assisted by his older brother Tanner. That was the first time in their professional careers that one brother assisted on a goal by the other, and the second time that both siblings recorded a point on the same tally. The other time was December 27th, when Riley Brace found the back of the net, drawing a primary assist from Jarrett and a secondary assist by Tanner. Prior to this season, the last time Wheeling had a set of brothers involved in on a goal was April 26, 2011, when Paul and Tim Crowder assisted on Dan Henningson's tally in a playoff game at Greenville. Paul assisted on a goal by Tim earlier in that series. Saturday was the 26th time that the Burton brothers have suited up together.
Back in Net, Back in the Win Column
Ty Rimmer returned to the Norfolk lineup in time for Saturday night's tilt, and promptly returned to his successful ways, as he stopped 33 of 35 Atlanta shots in a 3-2 victory for the Admirals. Norfolk had gone 11 straight games without Rimmer receiving a decision, as Philippe Cadorette started in Elmira on December 9th, Adam Courchaine played the next seven contests, and Nic Riopel god the nod in the final three games of the club's most recent road trip. Those three combined to go 3-7-1 in Rimmer's absence, while the second year pro enters Sunday on a three-game winning streak, having allowed just three goals on 93 shots. Despite a record which sits three games under .500, Rimmer has posted a very respectable .917 save percentage. In Wheeling's goal crease, Franky Palazzese will make his seventh straight start on Sunday, following his 26-save effort on Saturday. Palazzese has allowed one goal in each of his last two victories.
Virginians Come to West Virginia
Sunday afternoon marks the fourth of five head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Admirals this season, as well as the first of two battles at WesBanco Arena. Each of the first three clashes featuring the two clubs took place during the first four weeks of the campaign. Wheeling won its season opener, 3-0 at Norfolk Scope Arena, before the Admirals responded with a 4-2 decision the following night. Norfolk then got the upper hand in a 6-2 final score on November 7th, giving the ECHL returnees a 2-1 lead in the season series. This will be the Admirals' first visit to the Ohio Valley since March 19, 2000 - a 3-2 shootout win for the then Hampton Roads Admirals. Wheeling's last home victory against Hampton Roads took place on April 25, 1998 in the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Norfolk will make one more visit to town on March 13th.
