Elmira Jackals News Release
TOLEDO, OH - January 3, 2016 - Justin Bernhardt scored for the second consecutive game since returning from an injury, but the Jackals fell 4-1 in their four-game road trip finale tonight at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio.
Toledo's potent power-play opened the scoring 6:07 into the game when Colin Jacobs was whistled for tripping. Just 35 seconds into the Walleye's first man advantage Joel Chouinard released a wrist shot from the point through traffic and found the back of the net over Niklas Lundstrom's shoulder. A.J. Jenks and Shane Berschbach earned the helpers on Chouinard's fifth goal of the season.
The Walleye added to their lead in the second period at 5:41 with an unassisted tally by Tyler Sikura off of a turnover deep in the Jackals end. Toledo continued to extend its lead later in the second frame when A.J. Jenks ripped a wrist shot from blueline past Lundstrom for his ninth goal of the season. Ralfs Freibergs and Derek Docken earned the assists. The Walleye scored again just 23 seconds later with a tip-in marker from the slot by former Jackal Dane Walters. Dajon Mingo and Joel Chouinard provided the assists. Following Walter's goal, C.J. Motte was sent into the game to replace Niklas Lundstrom.
The Jackals did win the third period, 1-0, with Justin Bernhardt's rebound goal off a scrum in the crease. Bernhardt's sixth goal of the season, and second in as many games since being activated off the injured reserve, was assisted by Colin Jacobs and Cason Hohmann.
Niklas Lundstrom was handed the loss, allowing four goals on 26 shots in 30:41 of work. C.J. Motte stopped all 11 shots he faced in 29:19 of action. Jeff Lerg stopped 19 of 20 shots faced to earn the win.
