Allen Americans News Release
ALLEN, Texas- In a battle for first place in the Berry Conference, the Allen Americans defeated the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 5-4 tonight behind a Tobias Whelan hat trick in front of 3,771 at the Allen Event Center.
The Americans opened the scoring 2:40 into the opening period, when Judd Blackwater crashed the net and lifted the puck over Brian Foster for his ninth tally of the season.
The Mudbugs special teams would quickly erase the Americans lead however, to put the Bugs ahead 2-0 with back to back goals. Jamie Milam's shorthanded breakaway goal tied the game at 1 with 13:46 remaining in the first, Travis Clayton's power play goal 2:53 later put the Mudbugs on top 2-1.
Tobias Whelan, skating with the captain's 'C' in the absence of Jarret Lukin, would answer with his seventh goal of the season just three minutes later. Whelan's goal knotted the score at 2 heading into the first intermission.
Jeff Kyrzakos' powerplay goal at 12:55 of the second period put the Mudbugs back on top 3-2, before Tobias Whelan struck again with a power play goal of his own to tie the game at 3 with 1:35 remaining in the middle frame.
The Americans came out firing to start the final period and regained the lead 0:38 in, when Dave Bonk's wrister found it's way through Foster to put the Americans back on top 4-3.
Tobias Whelan's third goal of the night extended the Americans lead to 5-3 with 10:37 remaining. Whelan fired a shot at the net which deflected off of the stick of a 'Bug defender and into the net, giving him the hat trick. Whelan's third tally was answered by the Mudbugs late in the third, when Clay Plume beat LeMay on the power play with 6:48 remaining in the game, pulling the score to 5-4.
The remainder of regulation was primarily spent in the Americans zone but the Mudbugs were unable to find the equalizer thanks to some strong defensive play and stellar netminding from LeMay.
With the win, the Americans improve to 16-4-0 on the season and are back on top in the Berry Conference with 32 points.
The Americans will face-off against the Laredo Bucks tomorrow night in a rematch of the 2010 Southern Conference Semi-Finals. The puck drops at 7:05 at the Allen Event Center. Every fan in attendance will receive a free schedule poster, sponsored by Dr. Ross Miller.
Following the game, fans are invited to visit Boston's on 121 in McKinney for a post game meet-and-greet with Americans players and Ice Angels.
