Mallards Outlast Rapid City in Shootout
December 3, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
Eric Giosa, Zac Pearson and Phil Axtell converted penalty shots, Shane Lovdahl scored two goals and assisted on another in regulation and Adam Russo made 39 saves in regulation and overtime as the Quad City Mallards defeated the host Rapid City Rush 5-4 in a shootout Friday night.
The Mallards would be forgiven if they thought they had secured a regulation win when, with Quad City on the power play, Lovdahl scored from the left point with 59 seconds left in the third period to give the Flock a 4-3 lead.
However, after pulling goaltender Danny Battochio for an extra attacker, the Rush dramatically evened the score with just eight seconds remaining when Brendon Hodge pounced on a loose puck in the slot.
A scoreless overtime during which Russo made seven saves set the stage for the Mallards to outscore Rapid City 3-1 in the shootout.
Only Vladimir Hartinger succesfully converted a penalty shot for the Rush.
During a see-saw second period the Mallards twice came from behind to even the score.
At 2:24 of the second Ryan Menei gave Rapid City a 2-1 lead by snapping the puck home from the right wing circle.
The Mallards bounced make to make it 2-2 at 8:14 when Marino finished off a 2-on-1 rush from the top of the right wing circle.
Derek LeBlanc pushed the Rush back into the lead with a low shot from the slot at 10:36 of the second.
Tyler Shelast evened the score at three when he tipped in a power play goal just over a minute later.
It was the Mallards who opened the scoring while up 5-on-3 early in the contest.
Lovdahl provided the first goal of the night when his shot from the high slot carried home at 5:06 of the first period.
That Quad City lead lasted only a minute and fifteen seconds before Rapid City's Gio Flamminio evened the score with a wrist shot from the right point.
The Mallards battle the Rush in Rapid City again tomorrow night.
