
Wheeling Nailers Win Red Cross Blood Cup Challenge

Wheeling, WV- The Wheeling Nailers hockey team will bring home the American Red Cross Blood Cup for winning the 1st Annual Red Cross Blood Cup Challenge, Monday, March 26.
The drive, held at the River City Ale Works from noon to 6 p.m., brought in 119 presenting donors who voted for the Nailers, and totaled 100 productive units.
The Nailers totaled 34 more votes than ECHL rival Johnstown Chiefs blood drive did in Johnstown, Pa. The Chiefs' drive resulted in 77 productive units.
"It was great to see the amount of community pride and awareness Wheeling has in its hospital patients and its local hockey team," commented Chris Orris, Greater Alleghenies Region, American Red Cross Field Representative.
"Our goal for this drive was 100 units. With help from the Nailers, along with local blood donors and fans, we were able to make that goal. Everyone had fun and helped to save lives."
All presenting donors received a navy fleece blanket, a special campaign t-shirt and were entered into a raffle to win Nailer merchandise, such as Nailers t-shirts, stuffed animals and a signed puck. Wheeling Nailers hockey players were on site during the drive to greet and thank donors as they came in to donate. .
The Red Cross Blood Cup will be presented to the Wheeling Nailers on Friday, April 6, during their last home game in WesBanco Arena for the 2006-2007 regular season.
"The Nailers are extremely happy the area came together to support such a great cause
and help the Red Cross to make its blood goal," commented Kelly Clutter, director of ticketing for the Wheeling Nailers.
"We strive to help the community not only on the ice, but out in the public as well. The Nailers look forward to the blood cup challenge next year and continuing success against our close rival, the Chiefs."
The Greater Alleghenies Region services nearly 100 hospitals in a 100-county area, including all hospitals in the Johnstown & Wheeling areas.***
Patients in these hospitals need approximately 27,000 blood products annually.
