Trenton Devils News Release
READING, PA (March 28, 2007) - A three-goal outburst in the first period by the Trenton Titans allowed them to skate away with a 4-1 win against the Reading Royals at the Sovereign Center on Wednesday night.
It took just 32 seconds for the Titans to go up by one as Benoit Mondou stripped Malcolm MacMillan of the puck along the wall before circling into the slot and banging a slapshot off of Jeff Pietrasiak and across the goal line. The goal extended Mondou's point-streak to ten games.
Trenton went up 2-0 with a power play marker by Jim Henkel as the center took a drop pass in the slot from Troy Riddle before wristing home his 19th of the season. Riddle got into the scoring act himself 1:55 later when he fired a shot from the far circle that beat Pietrasiak clean to the blocker side for this 26th goal of the year and a three-goal cushion for the Titans.
Goaltender Curtis Darling came onto the ice at the second period in relief of Pietrasiak for what would be his first professional appearance. The rookie goalie stymied the Titans through the remaining two periods, stopping all 19 shots he faced.
Eric Werner provided on the only scoring for Reading when he one-timed MacMillan's face-off win past Gregg Naumenko at 7:15 of the second.
Naumenko and the penalty killing units of the Titans - 6-for-6 in the game - would keep the Royals off the board for the rest of the contest as Les Haggett sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 1:17 remaining.
A 36-save performance by Naumenko earned him his 21st win of the season, while Trenton's power play went 1-for-5 on the night.
