Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - In a marathon game that lasted 4:44 minutes, the RailRiders needed every second of Monday night's 10-8 extra-inning affair at Durham Bull's Athletic Park. Zoilo Almonte blasted his sixth home run of the year and drove in four runs, but recently activated Zealous Wheeler stole the show with a late-inning home run in the 13th inning to secure the back-and-forth affair. The SWB lineup combined for 17 hits and the RailRiders plated a season-high 10 runs in the win.
Starting pitcher Alfredo Aceves labored through the first, needing 36 pitches to navigate is way through eight batters. Second baseman Mike Fontenot began the frame with a walk and advanced to third after back-to-back singles loaded the bases. The first run of the inning came around after a passed ball raced past the glove of Arcia, allowing Fontenot to score. The second tally plated on a sacrifice fly by Cole Figueroa that gave the Bulls the early 2-0 advantage.
SWB responded with five unanswered runs in the third and fourth. The first run scored after Jose Pirela doubled down the right-field line and came across to score on a single by Wheeler.
After an early run in the third, the RailRiders offense found its groove in the fourth. Almonte led the inning off with a home run and Adonis Garcia followed an extra-base hit to begin the threat. Pirela added a hit later in the frame before Francisco Arcia doubled on a fly ball to right. The four-run fourth saw all nine RailRider hitters come to the plate and pushed the RailRiders lead to 5-2.
The patient Bulls attach responded with four tallies of its own in the fifth. Durham sent eight-men to the plate in the inning, after back-to-back triples by Cole Figueroa and Mikie Mahtook swung the game back in favor of the Bulls, 6-5.
From there, the sea-saw contests continued. Almonte brought the thunder again in the sixth, clubbing a single through the left side to that brought around Arcia and Wheeler. SWB added a run in the eighth after Ramon Flores doubled towards right and came around to score on the final RBI of the night by Almonte that made the lead 8-6 RailRiders.
After RailRiders reliever Matt Daley worked through a scoreless eighth inning, the RailRiders closer induced a fly ball out to begin the ninth, Justin Christian singled to set up the game-tying blast by Wilson Betemit to right that evened the game, 8-8.
After scoreless innings in the 11th and 12th by both teams, SWB found some good fortune in the 13th. Wheeler clubbed his first home run of the season on a drive to centerfield and SWB added one more tally after Dean Anna scored on a single by Russ Canzler.
The two run lead proved to be enough as right-hander Jim Miller (1-1) slammed the door in the 13th after working around a one-out base hit by catcher Ali Solis to secure the victory. The Bulls' sixth pitcher of the night, Steve Geltz (2-1) was slated with the loss.
The RailRiders will conclude a four-game set with the Bulls on Tuesday, April 29 at 11:05 a.m. SWB will toss right-hander Shane Greene (0-0, 6.75), while Durham elects to send right-hander Matt Andriese (1-2, 8.02) to the bump.
