Bats Drop Game, Series to Bisons

Louisville Bats News Release

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Things have never been easy for the Louisville baseball franchise in Buffalo, even back to the early Redbirds days. The status quo was maintained this season as the Buffalo Bisons topped the Bats 4-1 Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Field, taking three games of the four-game set.

Buffalo (13-10) earned the series win behind a strong outing from pitching prospect Marcus Stroman. Stroman (2-2) was pulled after six innings and 80 pitches of no-hit ball. It is speculated that the righty may be on his way to the Toronto Blue Jays for his next start-more than enough reason for the early exit despite the chance for a no-hitter.

Stroman allowed just one base runner, a first-inning walk to Rubén Gotay, and then sat down 16 straight Bats to finish his outing.

Louisville (11-14) fell to three games under .500 for the first time in 2014 and is now 58-118 all-time at Coca-Cola Field since 1988, having not won a series there since sweeping a four-game set in 2008.

The strong pitching by Stroman was not the only story of the evening. On Major League rehab with the Bats, Cincinnati Reds utility man Skip Schumaker was ejected in the bottom of the second.

After a pair of RBI singles by Steve Tolleson and Erik Kratz to give Buffalo a 2-0 lead, Schumaker had words for umpire Brian De Brauwere. De Brauwere earlier in the inning had ruled Dan Johnson second at safe on a double play turn at second base by Gotay, ruling that his foot was off the bag, though replays showed otherwise.

Bats manager Jim Riggleman argued immediately after the call to no avail, but Schumaker was not satisfied and chimed in a few plays later. Schumaker struck out in his only at-bat before his ejection and is now 3-for-5 on his rehab assignment through two games.

The Bats went in order in seven of nine innings-all but first and seventh. Against reliever Austin Bibens-Dirkx in the seventh, Jason Bourgeois laced a double down the right-field line for the team's first hit and then came in to score on Felix Pérez' RBI single. Gotay had the Bats' only other hit, an infield single, also in the seventh.

Neil Wagner pitched a perfect ninth inning for his third save of the season in as many chances.

Louisville has now not scored first or hit a home run since April 21 when they did both in Indianapolis in a 6-5 extra-inning loss.

Jeff Francis suffered the loss for the Bats, his third in his last four outings. Francis (3-3) went seven innings and was charged with four runs (three earned). He allowed six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

The Bats now travel to Rochester to spend their first off day of the season on Wednesday. They start a four-game series with the Red Wings on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at Frontier Field. Righty Josh Smith (4-0, 2.45) is scheduled to pitch for the Bats and LHP Kris Johnson (2-2, 2.86) for Rochester.
