Norfolk Tides News Release
Cord Phelps' bases-loaded triple powered Norfolk to a 7-4 comeback win over the Columbus Clippers in game two of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Harbor Park. The Tides dropped game one, 3-0.
Norfolk trailed the nightcap 4-2 entering the sixth inning before rallying for five runs against Clippers reliever Vinny Pestano (0-2). Norfolk loaded the bases on two singles and a walk before a Ryan Rohlinger error - Columbus' fourth of the game - loaded the bases for Phelps with the Tides trailing 4-3. Phelps followed by lining the first pitch he saw into the right field corner, clearing the bases and giving the Tides a 6-4 lead. Xavier Paul then plated Phelps with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-4.
Kelvin De La Cruz (1-2) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief, while Preston Guilmet worked a perfect seventh inning to register his third save of the season.
Norfolk starter T.J. McFarland allowed four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work. The 24-year-old, who was making his first appearance since being optioned from Baltimore, walked three and struck out one while throwing 45 of his 78 pitches for strikes.
In game one, Suk-Min Yoon worked five strong innings, but Columbus plated three late runs to knock off the Tides 3-0.
For his second straight start, Yoon did not allow an earned run over five innings of work. The 27-year-old South Korean allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out three, but Norfolk could not plate a run against the Columbus trio of T.J. House, Frank Hermann (1-0) and Mark Lowe.
Over his last four starts, Yoon has now posted a 1.80 ERA (4 ER, 20.0 IP).
The game was scoreless headed to the seventh inning before the Clippers plated three runs on four hits against Brad Brach (2-1). Roberto Perez had an RBI single to put Columbus on the board, while Jose Ramirez added a sacrifice fly before an RBI double by Justin Sellers.
The doubleheader split also ensured a four-game series split between the two clubs.
After an off day Wednesday, Norfolk opens up a four-game home series on Thursday against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Mike Wright (0-0, 2.78) is slated to make the start for the Tides against right-hander Caleb Cotham (0-2, 5.17), with first pitch set for 7:05.
