Gwinnett Stripers News Release
TOLEDO, OH - Behind the pitching of Atlanta Braves' right-hander Gavin Floyd and a 14-hit attack, the Gwinnett Braves (15-10) defeated the Toledo Mud Hens (10-16) by a 9-2 score on Tuesday night in the finale of the four-game series at Fifth Third Field. Gwinnett won three of four games in the series.
Floyd (W, 1-1), making his sixth minor league rehab start of 2014 and fifth start with Gwinnett, had his strongest outing of the season. Over 5.0 innings, he allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out four. Floyd threw 77 pitches, 50 for strikes and consistently threw his fastball in the 91-93 mph range.
The G-Braves wasted no time in getting Floyd a lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. Jose Constanza greeted Toledo starter Derek Hankins with a single to center, and Christian Bethancourt followed with a double to left, putting runners on second and third. Tommy La Stella scored Constanza with an RBI groundout for a 1-0 lead. Joey Terdoslavich extended his hitting streak to 10 games by lining a single to center, scoring Bethancourt to make it 2-0. After a Todd Cunningham single, Mark Hamilton pounded a long double to right-center scoring Terdoslavich and Cunningham for a 4-0 lead.
Gwinnett added a run to make it 5-0 in the top of the second as Steve Lerud doubled to right, move to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout to third by Bethancourt.
The only Toledo run against Floyd came in the bottom of the second, as Trevor Crowe (1) lifted a one-out solo home run to right field. His blast cut the Gwinnett lead to 5-1.
In the top of the sixth, Hamilton ripped a one-out double to left off Hawkins. However, heavy rains arrived, prompting a rain delay of 53 minutes.
Once play resumed, the G-Braves got back on the board quickly. With Nate Robertson now pitching for the Mud Hens, Hamilton moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center by Lerud to raise the lead to 6-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, with Atahualpa Severino now in for Floyd, Luis Exposito (2) delivered a two-out solo homer to left-center to make it a 6-2 game.
But the G-Braves responded in the top of the eighth, scoring three runs to make it 9-2. Hamilton drew a one-out walk from Robertson and scored from first on a long double to left-center by Sean Kazmar. Kazmar later scored as Toledo second baseman Brandon Douglas misplayed a ground ball hit by Constanza. Jhan Marinez replaced Robertson on the mound and gave up singles to Bethancourt and La Stella, making it 9-2. La Stella's RBI single in his final at-bat increased his on-base streak to 19 games.
Severino replaced Floyd after the rain delay and worked 2.0 innings with one hit, one earned run and two strikeouts. Wirfin Obispo worked 1.0 inning with one walk and Pedro Beato pitched the bottom of the ninth with one hit and one strikeout.
Hankins (L, 1-2) went 5.1 innings with eight hits, six earned runs, one walk and four strikeouts. Robertson worked 2.1 innings with three hits, one earned run, one walk and three strikeouts. Marinez was credited for 0.1 inning with two hits. Kevin Whelan closed out the game for the Mud Hens with a scoreless top of the ninth. He allowed one hit and struck out two.
Gwinnett's 14-hit night was led by Hamilton (2-for-3, two doubles, two RBIs) Terdoslavich (2-for-5 with a run and one RBI), Cunningham (2-for-5 with one run), Kazmar (2-for-4 with a double and one RBI), Lerud (2-for-4 with a double and one RBI) and La Stella (1-for-5 with 2 RBIs).
Hessman again paced Toledo with a 2-for-4 night and a double. Crowe and Exposito each hit solo homers to account for both Mud Hens' runs.
After an off-day on Wednesday, the Gwinnett Braves return to Coolray Field to begin an eight-game homestand on Thursday night.
