Saskatoon Blades News Release

SASKATOON, SK - The Brandon Wheat Kings showed why they're one of the top teams in the entire WHL.

With eight percent of tonights population being girls for girls rock night, the Blades looked to have an extra boost from the crowd. Especially with Sportsnet anchor Evanka Osmak in attendance.

8:10 in the first, John Quenneville scores off a rebound that hits the boards that goes right to his stick to open the scoring 1-0 for Brandon.

A shorthanded goal scored by Tanner Kaspick on a Connor Gay turnover on the Blades power play makes it 2-0 Wheat Kings.

Jayce Hawrlyuk streaked down the wing beating the defense and snipes it blocker side on Hamm which ends his night giving up 3 goals on 16 shots Nik Amundrud comes in and takes his place.

The goalie switch looked to spark some momentum for the Blades with Nikky Highlight showing flashes of brilliance with several big saves throughout the night.

That momentum carried forward as Ryan Graham gets his fifth in the slot on a pass from Connor Gay to cut the Brandon lead to 3-1.

Brandon would add another in the third on a rocket from the point courtesy of Macoy Erkamps that would ultimately put the game away for Brandon.

"They're a good hockey team and they got guys that played together for a little bit and just seemed to know where they are and make some pretty nice plays. If you're not dialled in or on the top of your game you're going to struggle against them. I thought our power play we were trying to make thought plays and couldn't get anything going," recalls Bob Woods on his thoughts on the teams performance.

With several key turnovers in tonight's game, Woods knew that prior to the game that Brandon would take advantage and had to try and eliminate that. "We talked in our pre scout that you can't turn the puck over against these guys. When you're playing a team like that it's got to be get the puck in deep, make their defense turn, go in and forecheck, make it hard on them we played right in there hands and we got what we deserved," adds Woods on the keys to beating Brandon.

"I thought we had good parts to our game tonight we weren't capitalizing on our scoring chances, that's tough when you're playing a team like that but not overly upset about the loss but there's definitely a lot to take from that," commented Nick Zajac how the Blades did on this night.

The team will now have to regroup as they prepare for their first long road trip of the season against central division opponents. Included in that group is the Kootenay Ice and the Medicine Hat Tigers. Two teams that the Blades have already faced this season.
