The Week That Was
---January 16th- RAPID CITY RUSH 4, QUAD CITY MALLARDS 3 F/OT (RC: C. Ferriero-2 G, GWG 2:06 in OT)
New defenseman Dallas Ehrhardt scored a power play goal with 2:19 left in regulation to force overtime and set the stage for rookie Cody Ferriero to add his second tally of the night, the game-winner, in the extra session to give the Rush a 4-3 win to kick off a three-game-in-three-night road trip.
---January 17th- RAPID CITY RUSH 3, MISSOURI MAVERICKS 1 (RC: J. Schultz-200th game w/Rush, G; A. Huff-1st goal as a professional)
Jesse Schultz celebrated his 200th game with the Rush in style, starting off the scoring rally for the Rush with 57.2 seconds left in the first period. Andy Huff gave the Rush a 2-0 lead in the middle frame on his first goal as a professional hockey player. Combined along with a 33-save performance by Johnny Griggs, the Rush took their second game in their crazy back-and-forth road trip with a 3-1 win over the Missouri Mavericks to claim sole possession of 5th place in the Central Division.
---JANUARY 18th-QUAD CITY MALLARDS 3, RAPID CITY RUSH 1 (QC: M. Duffy-Go-ahead goal 1:58 into 3rd period)
Justin Fox got things started for the Mallards less than four minutes into the game, but Daniel Barczuk answered in the second period to tie things up at 1-1 heading into the third. A slap shot from Matt Duffy on the far wall of the Rush zone 1:58 into the final frame gave the Mallards a 2-1 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish, ultimately leading to a 3-1 Mallards win, also forming a three-way tie for 2nd place in the Central Division between the Mallards, the Tulsa Oilers, and the Wichita Thunder.
Notes and Numbers
And Then There Were Four - With their character wins on Friday and Saturday, the Rush took home four of a possible six points on the road this past weekend, leaving them in sole possession of 5th place in the Central Division of the ECHL's Western Conference. Now only four teams remain ahead of the Rush: the Allen Americans in 1st with 57 points, and the Quad City Mallards, Tulsa Oilers, and Wichita Thunder all tied for 2nd with 42 points each. The Rush trail the second place teams by 8 points with 33 games to play in the regular season, hold two games in hand on the Oilers, and play the Thunder this weekend in a two-game set.
Top of the Line - The "go-to" line of the Rush, veteran Jesse Schultz and rookies Cody Ferriero and Andy Huff, have been on fire since the line was concocted by Coach Ferras and Coach DeSantis just a few games ago. The trio combined for 4 goals, 3 assists, 7 points, and a +5 overall rating in three games on the road this past weekend.
Record Watch - Four players are in position to re-write the history books in the Rush organization this season:
- Riley Weselowski - 12 games played away from Scott Wray's franchise record of 314
- Jesse Schultz - 5 points away from Scott Wray's franchise record of 236 points
- J.P. Chabot - 6 power play goals away from Chris Lipsett's single-season franchise record of 12 power play goals in a season (a record that has held since the inaugural 2008-09 season)
- Danny Battochio - 1 shutout away from sole possession of the single-season franchise record for shutouts with 3 (he already earned a share of this record back in the 2010-11 season)
CRUNCHING NUMBERS - Last Week vs the Mallards and Mavericks:
- 1 - the number of power play goals allowed by the Rush the entire weekend. Overall, the penalty kill for the Rush went 9/10 against the Mallards and the Mavericks, with the lone power play tally coming from Missouri's Andrew Courtney on Saturday night.
- 6 - the number of combined wins in "three-in-three" sets for the Rush. Overall, the Rush are 6-3-0 when playing three-games-in-three-night. Only one more set of the kind remains this season, taking place February 5th, 6th, and 7th, traveling from Tulsa to Missouri and then back to Tulsa. Each of the four "three-in-three" sets the Rush play this year all happen to be on the road.
