What to Watch this Weekend Across the USL: Week 8
June 10, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
It's an entertaining slate of Championship action set to play out this coming weekend
After four games in a dozen days, the boys in Old Glory Red finally have a weekend to relax and rest up for the upcoming slate of fixtures.
The Indomitable Club recently fell to Real Monarchs in Utah, 2-0, following a three-game homestand at Heart Health Park.
Republic FC doesn't return to the pitch for a regular season match until June 19 when Mark Briggs' men visit Oakland Roots SC for the first-ever competitive clash between the two clubs played out in the East Bay.
Just because Sacramento isn't in action over the weekend, that doesn't mean there aren't league games to sit back and enjoy over the next few days.
Pacific Division Update
It was a busy weekend for the clubs in the Pacific Division.
Last Saturday, a trio of matches played out including SRFC's 3-1 loss at the hands of Orange County SC. That very same night, Las Vegas Lights FC netted twice to secure a 2-0 win over Tacoma Defiance in the Sin City while Phoenix Rising FC and San Diego Loyal SC shared the spoils following a 2-2 draw. Phoenix netted twice in stoppage time by way of Santi Moar and Joey Calistri to stun San Diego and claim a point in the standings.
While Sacramento and Real Monarchs went head-to-head on Wednesday, so did Orange County and San Diego who played to a 1-1 result.
This Friday, Lights FC host San Antonio FC in a clash between Western Conference clubs. The following day, Orange County host Oakland Roots SC, Tacoma Defiance travels to Phoenix Rising FC and LA Galaxy II head down the I-5 for an encounter against San Diego.
Louisville City v Memphis 901
In the Central Division of the Eastern Conference, both Louisville and Memphis are itching to get back into contention to compete for the top spot in the group.
Memphis is off to a slow start with one win from four fixtures but that win came in its most recent matchup. On Saturday, Memphis earned a 2-1 win on the road against a strong Indy Eleven side. Had it not been for Indy's Karl Ouimette finding the back of the net deep in stoppage time, Memphis was close to logging an impressive clean sheet away from home.
Louisville has seven points through five fixtures this season and a win could see the club potentially climb as high as third in the Central Division. After opening the campaign with two wins from three games, LouCity has dropped its last two straight - a 2-1 loss at home to Indy Eleven on May 29 before being handed a 1-0 loss on the road against Atlanta United 2.
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC v The Miami FC
Tampa Bay Rowdies might be sitting on the summit of the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division standings but a win for either Pittsburgh or Miami will keep either side in the race to compete for the top spot.
Pittsburgh's season has had its ups and downs as Riverhounds SC currently have a claim to fifth place in the group with seven points. After scoring three goals in back-to-back matches - a 3-0 win over NY Red Bulls II on May 28 and a 3-2 win over Loudoun United on June 2 - Riverhounds were dealt a 1-0 loss at home to Austin Bold on Sunday.
The Miami FC currently sits in fourth place with nine points from six games. The Floridian club have dropped two of its last three games while surrendering a total of seven goals. A win for Miami in the Steel City could potentially see the club claim sole possession of second place.
OKC Energy FC v Birmingham Legion
It's a battle between first and last in the Eastern Conference Central Division.
Birmingham have claimed 13 points from its first seven matches and earned victories in four thus far. Legion have a hold on first place after obtaining all three points in each of its last three matches. Legion have already downed OKC Energy once this season - a 1-0 win at home on May 26 with Bruno Lapa's strike ultimately proving to be the difference.
OKC Energy are still in search of its first win but have earned a point in the standings in each of its last two games. After playing to a nil-nil draw against Memphis 901 on May 29, Energy followed up its performance with a 1-1 draw to Indy Eleven in Indiana. Former SRFC striker Frank Lopez netted the equalizer in the second half for the visitors.
