Oakland Roots Partners with Anthem, Puma and Town Kitchen to Support Youth Soccer in Oakland
June 10, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Oakland Roots News Release
Oakland Roots is helping bring sports back to Oakland youth by providing soccer equipment for community programs kicking off this week.
Run by the City of Oakland Parks, Recreation and Youth Development, Town camps teach youth the wonders of the great outdoors and respect for nature. Activities offered at the Camps, which will start on June 14th, help youth make new friends, build their problem-solving skills, and develop self confidence and independence.
Thanks to support from partners Anthem and Puma, Roots is providing every Recreation Center with soccer balls and equipment and supporting a special 'introduction to soccer' curriculum created by a coalition of local community soccer organizations including East Bay United Soccer Club, Oakland Soccer Club, Street Soccer USA, America SCORES and Oakland Genesis Soccer Club.
"We appreciate the support of the Oakland soccer community - Oakland Roots, East Bay United, Oakland Soccer Club, Street Soccer USA, America SCORES and Oakland Genesis in helping us get our program participants active again after COVID-19 and bringing the game of soccer to many more young people in Oakland through our Town Camp program," said Marcelina Sanchez, Recreation Supervisor at OPRYD.
Roots, Anthem and Puma are also providing equipment to support the free, annual Summer Camp provided by non-profit organization My Yute Soccer. Town Kitchen, which employs and trains youth from foster and re-entry programs in Oakland, is kicking off its brand-new partnership with the Roots by donating healthy snacks and lunches to all participants.
"Helping to give kids a safe pathway back to healthy sports activity is an important part of our work to support Oakland after the pandemic," said Roots Technical Director and Head Coach Jordan Ferrell. "Our long term goal is to have as many boys and girls from Oakland as possible representing the Roots, and that journey starts with inspiring the youth and giving them the chance to play. We want as many kids and families as possible to have access to the game of soccer, so we're proud to support the work of our colleagues in the Oakland soccer community and the City of Oakland".
