Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC – There is a story among the local First Nations people that Brentwood Bay was once teaming with Salmon. There were so many salmon that you could walk from one side to the other, on their backs. Well the local fishermen have come home empty handed and the waters off the coast of Victoria are yielding few salmon.

The Salmon Kings finished the month of January in Las Vegas Monday, again finding it difficult fill the net, they lost to the Wranglers 4-1. Vegas had a 2-1 lead late in the second period when two costly mistakes turned into goals for the Wranglers, and the Salmon Kings couldn't recover.

Half way into the first period Darren Lynch opened the scoring with his sixth of the season, assisted by Sean Limpright and Dustin Johner. Vegas went to the dressing room ahead by a marker.

Still 1-0, Wranglers defenseman Christian Chartier scored his fifth, Limpwright and Johner with the unselfish acts on the play.

The Salmon Kings were still in the game though, testing Wranglers netminder Sebastien Centomo 14 times in the second and he finally relented. Ryan Watson snagged his eighth of the season and first since coming off the injured reserve, on the powerplay. Andrei Glukhov recorded his second assist in as many nights and Chris Corrinet added his first helper since signing with the Salmon Kings.

The Wranglers strangled Victoria late in the second though and put the game out of reach. Victoria was killing another penalty at 18:16, when Chris Stanley teed up Joe Frederick's offering, and beat Jason Stone to regain a two goal lead.

1:04 later the Wranglers Darren Lynch, salted the wound with his second of the game and his seventh of the season, and the Wranglers went to the intermission with a commanding 4-1 lead.

Victoria's inability to light the lamp makes any third period comeback a challenge. That does not mean that Head Coach Bryan Maxwell does not have some words that will fire up his team. The Salmon Kings out-shot Vegas 14-2 in the final stanza. Centomo was up for the occasion making 36 stops, while Victoria's Jason Stone had 26 fired his way. Las Vegas rolled to the 4-1 victory taking 4 points in the two game series.

The Victoria Salmon Kings come home on Tuesday and immediately begin preparation to host the Fresno Falcons for the first time this season. Game one of the three game set goes Wednesday February 2, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. PST. Tickets are available at www.selectyourtickets.com or by phone at 250-220-7777.
