Wheeling's Exter Named In Glas Co. ECHL Saver of the Week

February 1, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

PRINCETON, N.J. - Joe Exter of Wheeling is the Reebok Hockey ECHL Saver of the Week for January 24-30.

Starting three games in three days after All-Star starting goaltender Dany Sabourin was called up to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, Exter was 3-0-0 with a goals-against average of 0.67 and a save percentage of .980.

After picking up his first shutout with 38 saves in a 1-0 win at Dayton on January 28, Exter stopped 34 shots in a 3-2 win against Reading on January 29. He closed out the week making 26 saves in a 1-0 win against Trenton. It was the fourth 1-0 game for Exter and the fourth 1-0 game of the season for Wheeling, tying the ECHL record for most 1-0 games. Under contract to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Exter is 4-7-1 with a goals-against average of 3.12 and a save percentage of .907 in 12 games with Wheeling.

In his first professional season with the Nailers in 2003-04, Exter was 8-2-0 with two shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.30 and a save percentage of .924 in 15 regular season games and he also appeared on one Kelly Cup Playoff game for Wheeling.

On March 7, 2003, Exter, then playing for Merrimack College, had his helmet knocked loose in an on-ice collision. Exter's head hit the ice, he was knocked unconscious and he began to convulse after suffering two skull fractures. Exter spent almost two weeks in a coma. After waking up from the coma, doctors were simply hoping that Exter would be able to walk again and felt that hockey was out of the question. Exter began skating three months later, but was not drafted.

He signed an AHL contract with the Penguins and by playing 15 games in 2003-04, his contract was automatically renewed for 2004-05.
