May 8, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
BOOM GO THE FIREWORKS: West Virginia beat Kannapolis 2-0 on Friday night. Each team used two pitchers in a game that saw a combined 27 strikeouts, including nine by winning pitcher Kyle McPherson and 14 by Intimidators starter Terry Doyle, matching his career best in a single game. Rogelio Noris hit a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning and Jarek Cunningham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth to provide all the Power offense needed.
STELLAR START: Kyle McPherson pitched seven solid innings of four-hit ball while earning the win on Friday. It was the third seven-inning start by a Power pitcher this season and second by McPherson. West Virginia has won both of the right-hander's seven inning starts this season, but lost Hunter Strickland earlier this homestand against Greensboro.
E: In Friday's win, West Virginia committed three errors in a game for the third time this season. It was, however, the first time that they won a game while matching their season-high in miscues. The Power committed three errors on April 9 in a 5-0 loss at Savannah and on April 21 in a 6-4 loss to Greenville. West Virginia is 3-7 when committing two or more errors in a single game this year.
BEEN CAUGHT STEALIN': The Power have caught stealing or picked off 20 times this season, third most in the South Atlantic League. West Virginia base runners have attempted 37 stolen bases this season and have a league-low 17 steals for a 46% success rate. Asheville has 45 stolen bases to lead the league, while Savannah has a SAL-best success rate of 82%. Only Lakewood (28 times in 63 attempts) and Asheville (22 times in 69 attempts) have been caught more than West Virginia this season.
BACK ON TRACK: Jarek Cunningham had two hits in Thursday's loss and snapped five game hitless streak. Cunningham's last base hit came on April 26 at Kannapolis, and then the Power infielder proceeded to go without a base hit in his next 21 at bats. Since appearing in the league's top ten hitters on April 15, Cunningham has seen his average drop from .353 to .278 by going 15 for 63 (.238 average over 16 games).
RECENT HISTORY: West Virginia beat Kannapolis three times during a four game set from April 25 through April 28. The Power outscored the Intimidators 24-13 during their series at FieldCrest Cannon Stadium in April. West Virginia hit .321 during the series, while Kannapolis hit at a .261 clip. Power hitters banged out 43 hits during the series, compared 30 for the Intimidators.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia is 2-16 when scoring four runs or less in a game this year, but holds a 10-0 mark when scoring five or more... Power hitters struck out 15 times on Friday, setting a high-water mark. West Virginia hitters had previous struck out no more than 12 times in any one game this season... Bengie Gonzalez has been held with out a hit in his last seven games (0-21) overall since fifth inning single on 4/29).
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh fell 4-3 to St. Louis at PNC Park... Indianapolis beat Buffalo 8-5... Altoona was shutout 3-0 by Erie... Bradenton beat Charlotte 6-1. Tony Sanchez, Brock Holt, and Robbie Grossman all had doubles for the Marauders.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com.
