Lexington Legends News Release
Back to back first-inning homers by J.D. Martinez and Kody Hinze helped Lexington build an early lead, and the Legends hung on to beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 7-4 Saturday night at Applebee's Park.
Jose Altuve and Jiovanni Mier drew walks from Greensboro starter Curtis Petersen in the bottom of the first. After Jake Goebbert grounded into a force play, Martinez homered to right field, his fifth home run of the year, to put Lexington in front 3-0. Hinze followed with his seventh home run to make it 4-0.
Martinez doubled to lead off the third inning, and Hinze followed with an RBI single. Hinze went to second on the play at home plate, and moved to third on a base hit by Jonathan Meyer. With Rene Garcia at bat, Meyer attempted to steal second. Catcher Kyle Skipworth's throw sailed into center field for an error, allowing Hinze to score and Meyer to reach third. Meyer scored on Garcia's sacrifice fly to give the Legends a 7-0 margin.
Hinze and Martinez are tied for the South Atlantic League lead in RBI with 30, and Hinze is tied for the league lead in home runs.
Greensboro cut the lead to 7-4 on a pair of two-run homers, one by Skipworth in the fourth inning and another by Justin Bass in the fifth.
Lexington starter Jose Cisnero (2-1) worked the first five innings to earn the win. Arcenio Leon allowed only one hit over the next three and two-thirds innings, but walked the bases full with two outs in the ninth. Kirk Clark relieved and got the final out and a save when Rand Smith lined out to left fielder Jake Goebbert. Peterson (0-3) took the loss.
The Legends and Grasshoppers will play the third game of the four-game series Sunday afternoon at Applebee's Park. Game time is 2:05 p.m.
