Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends came back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the game, but West Virginia scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Legends 6-5 Saturday night in Charleston.
West Virginia jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Evan Chambers led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Lexington catcher Rene Garcia. Jarek Cunningham's single scored Chambers with the game's first run. Cunningham also stole second, and went to third on a second throwing error charged to Garcia. A walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Ramon Cabrera's ground out to shortstop brought home a second run, and a sacrifice fly by Jesus Brito made the score 3-0. Jose Hernandez followed with an RBI single to give the Power a 4-0 margin.
West Virginia added a run in the third inning when Kyle Morgan was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Bengie Gonzalez.
The Legends got on the board in the fourth when J.D. Martinez led off with his 13th home run of the year. Martinez had three hits in the game to raise his South Atlantic League-leading batting average to .358.
Lexington tied the game with four runs in the seventh. Martinez led off with a single, and with one out, Kody Hinze hit his 13th home run of the year and first since May 18 to cut the West Virginia lead to two at 5-3. The two RBI gave Hinze 67 for the season, best in the SAL.
Aaron Bray followed Hinze's homer with a double, and with two outs, consecutive singles by Brian Kemp, Grant Hogue and Jose Altuve produced two runs to tie the score at 5-5.
The Power broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth on a single by Gonzalez, a sacrifice by Chambers and a base hit by Aaron Baker. Reliever Mark Baca retired the Legends in order in the ninth.
Maurice Bankston (4-4), who entered the game in the seventh inning, picked up the win. Wander Alvino (3-2) was the losing pitcher.
The series continues with a 2:05 p.m. game Sunday in Charleston.
