Bolden Leads 'Dads to Doubleheader Sweep of Grasshoppers

HICKORY, NC - CF/1B Jared Bolden was the hero for the Hickory Crawdads in both games of their doubleheader with the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday night, taking game one, 7-6, in 11 innings and game two, 4-0, in seven innings. Bolden finished a combined 5-for-6 on the night with a home run, five RBIs, two doubles and three runs scored.

With Greensboro (9-8, 41-46) leading, 5-4, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, 2B Travis Adair sparked the comeback for Hickory (9-8, 49-38). With one out, Adair tripled down the right field line and came in to score on a sacrifice fly to center by DH Joe Bonadonna to tie the game, 5-5, and force extra innings.

The 'Hoppers reclaimed the lead in the top of the 11th on a leadoff homer by RF Rand Smith against 'Dads reliever LHP Joseph Ortiz (1-1, 1.74 ERA) to push Greensboro ahead, 6-5.

The Crawdads responed with a one-out rally in the bottom of the frame against Greensboro reliever RHP Natividad Dilone (2-3, 3.81 ERA). After 1B Mike Ortiz, Adair, and Bonadonna each singled to load the bases with only one out, Bolden smacked a bouncing ball that skipped over 1B Ryan Keedy, allowing Ortiz and Adair to score and hand the 'Dads a dramatic 7-6 walkoff victory in game one .

Ortiz picked up the win for Hickory in game one, surrendering just one run on two hits with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Dilone took the loss for Greensboro. Click here for the complete box score for game one.

Bolden began game two of the doublheader continuing his hot streak from game one. With Adair on base and one out in the bottom of the first, Bolden launched a two-run homer to right field off Grasshoppers starter RHP Robert Morey (0-1, 6.75 ERA) to put the 'Dads up early, 2-0.

Bolden wasn't finished for Hickory, scoring another run in the third inning. After leading off with a double to right field, he advanced to third and scored on two consecutive wild pitches by 'Hoppers reliever RHP Curtis Petersen. RF Jared Prince and 3B Matt West followed with walks before DH Cody Podraza drove Prince home with an RBI double, pushing the 'Dads ahead to the eventual final score of 4-0.

Crawdads starter RHP Braden Tullis (3-0, 2.18 ERA) and relievers RHP Ovispo De Los Santos and RHP Tyler Tufts combined to hurl the 'Dads 12th shutout of the season and fifth of the second half. Tullis picked up the win, allowing just three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings. De Los Santos and Tufts each dealt one scoreless inning in relief of Tullis.
