Hagerstown Suns News Release
After a two-hour rain delay, the game between the Hagerstown Suns (6-10) and the Greensville Drive (11-5) ended late on Friday, with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth giving the Drive a 4-3 victory.
The Suns got off on the right foot after the delay, scoring in the top of the first inning. With one out, Francisco Soriano walked, stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Steven Souza.
Greenville responded in the bottom of the second inning with an unearned run against Suns starter Paul Demny. Demny also surrendered a solo home run in the bottom of the third to second baseman Derrick Gibson.
The home run, Gibson's second of the season, gave Greenville a 2-1 lead.
Hagerstown wasted no time coming back, as Justino Cuevas homered over the left-field fence to lead off the top of the fourth inning. The home run, the first of the year by Cuevas, brought the score level at 2-2.
The score stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh inning.
Patrick Arnold (2-3), who had relieved Demny in the bottom of the sixth inning, surrendered a run on two walks and two base hits in the seventh. However, the right-hander did limit the damage, striking out Michael Almanzar to end the inning with the bases loaded after intentionally walking Reymond Fuentes.
The score stayed 3-2 Greenville until the top of the ninth inning.
With one out in the ninth, Suns center fielder Eury Perez was hit by a pitch and advanced to second base on a ground out by Jeff Kobernus. Soriano then followed with a base hit to right field and Perez scored the tying run just ahead of the throw from Fuentes.
The game looked to be headed to extra-innings for the second night in a row. However, with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Drive first baseman Chris McGuiness ended the contest with one swing of the bat. McGuiness homered over the left-field fence off Arnold, giving Greenville a 4-3 victory.
Arnold took the loss for Hagerstown after allowing two runs in three and one third innings of work. Demny, the Suns starter, got a no decision after allowing two runs in five innings. Just one of the two runs was earned.
Anatanaer Batista (3-4) got the win for the Drive, though he did allow one run in his one inning of work. Greenville starter Ryan Pressly lasted just three and two thirds innings, allowing two runs on four hits before being replaced by Pedro Perez. Perez tossed four and a third innings of shutout relief for the Drive.
