Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns lost a two-run lead in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to an 8-6 loss at the hands of the Greenville Drive.
Hagerstown got on the board first, as Jeff Kobernus singled to lead off the game and later scored on a groundout by Justin Bloxom.
The lead did not last past the first batter of the bottom half of the first inning, however, as Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a home run to right field, tying the game 1-1.
Unfazed, the Suns came back with three runs on two hits and two errors in the top of the second. The big hit of the rally came on a double to left field by Fransisco Soriano.
After Greenville got one back in the bottom of the third, Hagerstown extended their lead to 5-2 in the fifth. With one out in the fifth inning, Destin Hood hit a mammoth home run to left field. The homer, which cleared the 30-foot hight left field fence by approximately 25 feet, was Hood's third of the season.
The 5-2 lead became 6-2 when Justino Cuevas and Kobernus hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning.
Greenville began their comeback in the bottom of the sixth with two runs off Suns starter Paul Applebee, to bring the score to 6-4.
Applebee ended up tossing five and two thirds innings while allowing four runs on six hits. The lefty did not walk a batter and struck out four.
The final scoring in the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning. Greenville scored four times on four hits and one error against Suns closer Dean Weaver (0-3) in the inning, giving the Drive an 8-6 lead.
Hagerstown was retired 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth inning by Drive reliever Jeremiah Bayer (5-1).
Bayer threw four innings and allowed just one run in relief of Drive starter Manuel Rivera. River tossed the first five innings and allowed five runs, though only two were earned.
The Suns have now lost two of the first three games in their five-game series with the Drive. Game four will be on Sunday, July 11th at 7:00.
