Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power edged the Lexington Legends 6-5 on Saturday evening at Appalachian Power Park. Aaron Baker drove in Bengie Gonzalez in the eighth to break a five all tie and give the Power its second win of this five game series.
West Virginia plated four runs in the first inning against Brad Dydalewicz. Evan Chambers lead off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a base hit by Jarek Cunningham. Cunningham then stole second, advanced on an error, and later scored on a ground out. The Power also got runs on a sacrifice fly by Jesus Brito and a single by Jose Hernandez.
In the third inning, West Virginia added a run when Gonzalez doubled in Kyle Morgan to build a 5-0 edge. The Legends were held hitless over the first three innings by Jason Erickson, but managed a run in the four when J.D. Martinez hit his 13th home run of the season. Lexington tied the game against Erickson and the Power bullpen in the seventh, scoring four runs on six hits.
In the home half of the eighth, Gonzalez reached on a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Baker singled to right field to drive in the eventual winning run.
Erickson pitched six and two thirds, but did not factor in the decision. Maurice Bankston (4-4) was the pitcher of record with the run scored in the eighth against Legends' reliever Wander Alvino (3-2). Marc Baca pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save. Baker and Gonzalez had two hits each, while the Power had six different players drive in runs. Martinez had three of the nine Lexington base hits.
Six of the 11 games played between these two clubs this season have been decided by one run or less, including each of the last five games.
West Virginia and Lexington will play Sunday afternoon at 2:05 at Appalachian Power Park. Nathan Baker gets the start for the Power against the Legends' Robby Donovan.
