Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - For the second time in this series, the Augusta GreenJackets turned three double plays in a game and got a solid start from Brian Irving in a 3-2 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday night.

Irving, making just his second home appearance since May 30th, turned in the longest outing of his career. He fired 7.1 innings and allowed two runs - both earned - on eight hits. Irving (5-2) didn't walk anyone, struck out four and is now 3-1 in his five starts.

The Jackets got a run for their starter in the first on an RBI single by Nick Liles to put Augusta up 1-0. Kannapolis loaded the bases off Irving with one out in the second but the righty got out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly ball out. In the third, Irving wasn't as lucky as a Michael Richard single and a Brady Shoemaker double put runners at second and third with no one out. Richard scored on a wild pitch while Shoemaker came home on an Ian Gac groundout to give Kannapolis a one-run lead.

Irving settled down after that and allowed just two hits in his final 4.1 innings. His defense helped, turning three double plays for the second time this series.

Augusta reclaimed the lead in the sixth after Ryan Cavan led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundout. Luke Anders hit a key run-scoring double to the gap in right-center to score Cavan and tie things at two. With two outs, Hector Sanchez blooped a single into center to score Anders and give the Jackets the lead.

Kannapolis had just two baserunners in the final three innings, as Jose Casilla induced a double play ball to get out of the eighth. Casilla went on to retire three of the four hitters he faced in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the year.

Justin Collop (5-7) takes the loss for Kannapolis despite striking out a career-best ten hitters in seven innings.

With the win, Augusta is now 14-10 in one-run games this season. The Jackets send Chris Heston (3-9, 5.00) to the mound on Sunday afternoon to face Matt Wickswat (5-4, 4.68) in an effort to earn a series win in the five-game set. First pitch will come at 5:35 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 5:20 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
