Wells Dominant But Baysox Edged Late
May 27, 2019 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Erie, PA - Alex Wells was dominant in seven shuout innings striking out six batters, but the Baysox saw a late lead slip away in a 4-1 defeat in Erie on Memorial Day.
Wells allowed just one at-bat against with a runner in scoring position in seven innings. That came in the seventh with a runner at second a two down. He struck out Sergio Alcantara with a big curveball to end the frame and preserve a 1-0 lead.
Erie rallied in the eighth though. Reliever Tyler Erwin allowed an opposite field line drive double down the left field line from Chad Sedio. Chace Numata then attempted to bunt nut got deep in the count and walked on a 3-2 pitch. Luke Burch then bunted, perfectly placing one up the third base line. Erwin's throw was on target but late and the bases were loaded.
Taylor Grover entered out of the Baysox pen but a hard groundball from Derek Hill beat Baysox shortstop Mason McCoy to his backhand side and the error allowed two runs to score. Erie would later get a soft, 2-RBI single to left field from Isaac Paredes with the infield drawn in for a 4-1 advantage.
Bowie was able to grab the lead in the fourth inning off of Erie starter Matt Manning. Ryan McKenna doubled into the left field corner to leadoff the frame. With two down, Martin Cervenka singled him home to put the Baysox on top 1-0. The lead held until the Erie eighth inning rally.
The Baysox now head home to begin a three-game series with Akron and a six-game homestand. RHP Dean Kremer makes his second start since joining Bowie. First pitch is for 6:35 p.m. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior on wnav.com, baysox.com and via the Tune-In App by searching Baysox.
