Matheney's Slam Lifts Portland over Curve on Memorial Day

PORTLAND, Maine - The Altoona Curve lost, 7-3, to the Portland Sea Dogs after a game-winning grand slam by Tate Matheny broke a tie game in the ninth inning at Hadlock Field on Monday.

The Curve (23-26) fell to 1-6 on the current road trip while the Sea Dogs (16-32) earned their second home series win of the season by taking three-of-four over the weekend.

With the Curve down by one run through eight, Jared Oliva led off the ninth and clubbed his second homer of the year to tie the game, 3-3, and greet reliever Durbin Feltman (Win, 2-1) to the game.

Matt Eckelman (Loss, 1-2) recorded the first two outs of the ninth sandwiched around a one-out single by Portland's Brett Netzer. Josh Tobias and Cody Asche each worked two-out walks to load the bases for Matheny, who cleared the 16-foot wall in right on the first pitch of his game-ending at bat.

The Sea Dogs built a three-run lead with one run in the second against Austin Coley, who made his 2019 Curve debut. Matheny started the inning with a double and scored on an RBI single by Luke Tendler for the first run of the game.

In the fifth, Portland scratched two more across in the Double-A debut of Ryan Valdes pitching for Altoona. Valdes pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen before Portland's first five batters reach and scored two runs. Joel Cesar entered with no outs and the bases full and escaped the jam without any more runs scoring. Cesar and Blake Weiman each threw two scoreless inning in relief.

Altoona chipped away with single runs in the seventh and eight before Oliva's game-tying blast. Alfredo Reyes walked with one out in the seventh and scored on a past ball during the seventh before he beat an infield single in the eighth to score another.

The Curve enter the homestretch of their 10-game road trip on Tuesday and begin a three-game series with the Trenton Thunder. The Curve have yet to announce a starter against Thunder right-hander Rony Garcia (1-3, 3.67). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at ARM & HAMMER Park.
