Johnstown, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs' busiest week so far this season played to their advantage because the team was playing some of its best hockey of the year. Johnstown went 3-1-0 over a span of five days last week to claim first place in the North Division. This week the Chiefs will try to pad their lead atop the division with a pair of home games against Reading and Trenton.

This Week:

11/21 vs. Reading, 7:05 p.m. - Home (2-0-0), Away (1-0-0)

Johnstown and Reading's season series is almost at its halfway point and the season hasn't hit the first quarter pole yet. The Chiefs have won the first three of the team's 10 contests of the 2008-09 campaign, and have outscored the Royals 15-10. Johnstown and Reading have played some thoroughly entertaining games this season that twice (6-4 win on 10/25 & 5-4 win on 11/8) featured Johnstown building an early lead and Reading fighting furiously to come back. Special teams play could play a major role in the game. Johnstown is 3-for-15 (0-for-6 at home) on the power play against Reading including one shorthanded goal, while the Royals are 2-for-18 (0-for-9 at CCWM) including two shorthanded goals.

11/22 vs. Trenton, 7:05 p.m. - Home (1-0-0), Away (1-1-0)

The Chiefs took a 2-1-0 advantage this season against Trenton with a 6-2 win last Friday. The Devils have been struggling in the early portion of this season, but one of their three wins came against Johnstown. That 5-2 win featured the most goals given up by the Chiefs' defense in a game this season. Trenton might have trouble replicating that offense, though, as they begin the week without three of the teams top seven scorers including Eric Castonguay who leads the team with 14 points (5G, 9A). Two of the ECHL's top defensemen will be featured on Saturday with the Chiefs' Jon Landry (6G, 4A) and Ryan Gunderson (3G, 8A) trying to add to their point totals.

Last Week: (3-1-0)

11/12 vs. Cincinnati: W 7-4

Johnstown and Cincinnati clashed for the first time since the 2008 North Division Semifinals in the Chiefs' second-annual Kid's Day Game. Even though the game started at 10:30 a.m. Johnstown's offense was wide awake from the beginning. Matt Robinson (3:10) and Randy Rowe (9:52, SH) scored in the first period to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead that they wouldn't look back from. Olivier Latendresse cut the Chiefs' lead to one with a shorthanded goal at 3:28 of the second, but Ryan Garlock came right back with a shorty for the Chiefs at 8:58. Andrew Sarauer assisted on each of the Chiefs' first two goals, and before the game was over he would score two of his own, and add two more assists for a six point game. Skating on a line with Garlock (1G, 3A) and Robinson (2G, 1A), Sarauer and his mates combined for 13 points in the game. Jon Landry scored his team-leading third game winning goal and Kris Mayotte won his fourth game of the season by making 35 saves.

11/14 vs. Trenton: W 6-2

The Chiefs were looking to finish their four-game home stretch with a perfect 4-0-0 with a win against Trenton. With four first period goals, the Chiefs chased Trenton starter Jason Smith from the net and cruised the rest of the way. The four-goal outburst tied the four-goal third period against Cincinnati the previous game for the Chiefs' most productive period of the year. Ryan Garlock (1:13), Brian Deeth (1:21), Petr Pohl (14:54), and Alex Penner (16:33) all tallied in the first frame for Johnstown. Garlock's and Deeth's goals, separated by eight seconds, were the quickest back-to-back goals scored by the Chiefs this year. Pohl stretched the lead to 5-0 at 4:33 of the second before David Leaderer and Ryan Gunderson beat Kris Mayotte to trim the Chiefs' lead to three. Greg Gallagher's first goal of the season in the third (16:24, PP) gave the home team a bit of insurance. Mayotte made 26 saves in the win.

11/15 at Dayton: W 4-1

Winners of six straight, including two on the road, the Chiefs took to the ice at Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio in a game between North Division heavyweights. Like the previous two games, Johnstown struck twice in the opening period, and played solid defense the rest of the way to earn the win. Petr Pohl scored his third goal in two games to open the scoring at 7:01, and Kyle Wharton followed that at 15:40 with his first goal, on the power play, as a Chief. Jon Landry cashed in for the sixth time this season at 8:45 of the second to make it 3-0 in favor of Johnstown, but Dayton's Jarret Lukin converted a power play at 17:54 to reduce Johnstown's advantage. The Chiefs put on a defensive clinic in the third, limiting Dayton to just five shots, and Ryan Garlock scored into an empty net to seal the win.

11/16 at Dayton: L 3-1

Whether the team was tired from playing three games in four days, or whether Dayton's defense was that much better than the previous night, Johnstown's offense never got on track as its seven-game win streak came to an end. The Chiefs fell behind on a first-period power play goal by Les Reany (7:33), and a shorty in the second by Dan Lapointe (8:29). Petr Pohl gave Johnstown life with his sixth goal of the season in the second (11:35, SH), but Dayton played shut down "D" in the third and got an empty net goal from Justin Bowers with less than a second left to set the final. Kris Mayotte was saddled with his first loss of the year, but allowed just two goals on 21 shots.

And the Nominees Are: Two Johnstown Chiefs players are in the running for a weekly ECHL award. Ryan Garlock has been nominated for the ECHL Player of the Week award. The second year center from Iroquois Falls, Ontario racked up seven points (3G, 4A) in four games this week. Garlock's goal at 1:13 of the first against Trenton was the fastest goal to begin a game for Johnstown this season. He currently sits third on the team in scoring with 12 points (6G, 6A) in nine games. Kris Mayotte has been nominated for the ECHL Goalie of the Week award as well. Mayotte went 3-1-0 this week to improve his season record to 6-1-0. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native who signed as a free agent over the summer ranks among the league leaders in wins (6, 2nd), goals against average (2.12, 3rd), and save percentage (.921, 9th). Mayotte was named ECHL Goalie of the Week for the week of 10/27-11/2 as he went 2-0-0 with a 1.92 GAA and a .934 SV.

First to 10: The Johnstown Chiefs' win 11/15 against the Dayton Bombers gave them the second longest winning streak in team history, and also made them the first team to 10 wins in the ECHL this season. They were able to accomplish the feat 22 days sooner than the 2007-08 season when they didn't win game number 10 until December 7 against Charlotte. The Alaska Aces, second to 10 wins this season, were the first team to reach 10 wins in 2007-08, accomplishing the feat on 11/16/07. The Cincinnati Cyclones were the first American Conference team to win 10 last season as they got there on 11/20/07.

We Went Streaking: After a 3-3-0 start, the Chiefs reeled off seven consecutive wins, and moved into first place in the North Division. Johnstown outscored its opponents 33-17 over the streak which included wins over Wheeling, three road wins against Dayton (0-4-1 last season), weekend two-game sweep of Reading, 7-4 win over defending Kelly Cup champion Cincinnati, and a 6-2 win over Trenton. Kris Mayotte earned wins in six of the seven games and had a solid 2.14 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. During the streak the Chiefs were 4-0-0 at home and 3-0-0 on the road. The win streak was two better than last year's best five-game streak which the team did twice (2/27-3/7 & 3/28-4/4). Overall, the Chiefs had six winning streaks of three games or more in 2007-08. The team record for a winning streak is 10 games set in 1993-94.
