Washington Spirit News Release
Washington, D.C. - The Spirit have announced that midfielder Chinyelu Asher and forwards Cali Farquharson and Mariana Speckmaier have been waived and placed on the offseason re-entry wire.
After being a member of the 2018 Spirit Reserves, Asher returned to the Washington Spirit in the spring of 2021 as a National Team Replacement Player prior to signing a contract through the end of the season. Asher appeared in one match during the 2021 Challenge Cup and two matches during the regular season. The Jamaican international made a big impact off the field for the Spirit, coaching youth soccer for Open Goal Project and at Cornerstone Academy in Washington, D.C.
Speckmaier, a member of the 2021 Spirit draft class, appeared in three games for the Spirit. In addition to her play with the Spirit, Speckmaier made her international debut with Venezuela. Most recently, Speckmaier scored her first career international goal in a 2-1 win for Venezuela over India. During her time at Clemson, Speckmaier scored 25 goals and added 29 assists.
Farquharson was signed as a National Team Replacement Player in April. Due to injury, the Arizona native did not see the field for the Spirit.
