State College Spikes News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - David Washington set a new State College Spikes record with his ninth home run of the year as the Spikes delivered three round-trippers and 15 hits total to top the Williamsport Crosscutters, 10-4, at Historic Bowman Field on Tuesday night.

The win was the fifth in a row for State College (36-23), who went 13 games above .500 for the first time in franchise history. The Spikes stayed tied with Jamestown for the New York-Penn League's best record as the two teams continue to lead the Pinckney Division.

Washington's record-setting bomb was a two-run shot to left-center field off Shane Martin (3-4) on a 2-2 pitch in the third inning to give State College a 3-2 lead. The Spikes' All-Star first baseman pulled ahead of Mark Hamilton (2006) and Calvin Anderson (2008), who each produced eight homers in a single season.

In addition, Washington's three runs batted in upped his league-leading total to 40, making him just the second Spikes player to reach that total in a season. Nathan Southard set the State College record with 44 RBI in 2006.

The long ball started the Spikes' offense rolling, as Jimmy Bosco broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth with his two-run blast to left field. Steven Ramos also went deep to left field with a solo homer in the eighth inning, his second of the year.

Cesar Valera and Brett Wiley each put together three-hit games for State College, with Wiley contributing a double. Valera is now 17-for-31 at the plate in seven games against Williamsport (29-30) this year, good for a .548 average.

Ramos went 2-for-5 on the night to increase his batting average to .361, which still leads the NYPL. Washington and Ronald Castillo also put together multi-hit nights, with Castillo knocking in three runs.

Andrew Pierce (1-2) notched his first professional victory in relief for the Spikes. Pierce went four scoreless innings and gave up five hits while striking out one. State College starter Juan Bautista allowed four runs, three earned, over four innings of work, making for his first start of the year to last less than five frames.

Martin took the loss for the Crosscutters after allowing the first five Spikes runs on eight hits and a walk. The right-handed starter struck out three over five innings.

The Spikes are 4-0 on the season at Historic Bowman Field.

Both teams now head back to State College to continue their three-game series with a Wednesday night matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 7:05 p.m. game will feature right-hander Arturo Reyes (0-2) going for the Spikes against Crosscutters right-hander Mitch Gueller (3-6).
