Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - ValleyCats starter Andrew Thurman gave Tri-City exactly what they needed to end the team's two-game skid as they defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters Tuesday night 2-1.
Thurman ran into some trouble right off the bat, however. Center fielder B.J. Boyd singled with one out and was pushed to third on a double by Ryon Healy. Manager Ed Romero decided to intentionally walk Ryan Huck to load the bases, a move that ended up paying off as Thurman induced an inning-ending double play.
The 'Cats struck first in the bottom of the second. Lake Monsters starter Matt Stalcup was removed from the game before the start of the inning, giving way to Hunter Adkins. First baseman Conrad Gregor welcomed Adkins to the game with a lead-off double. Catcher Brett Booth pushed Gregor over to third on a groundout to the right side of the infield. With the infield in, Ronnie Mitchell scorched a line drive to center field to give Tri-City an early 1-0 lead.
The ValleyCats padded their lead in the bottom of the third to give Thurman, and the rest of the staff, all the support they needed. James Ramsay walked with one out, and advanced to second base on a groundout by Tyler White. Michael Martinez singled home Ramsay to extend the 'Cats lead to two.
Vermont touched up Thurman for a run at the end of his outing, but the bullpen for the second game in a row shut down the Lake Monsters chance of any further damage.
"Outstanding," said Romero. "[Thurman] had good stuff tonight. His fastball had life. Houser was awesome. He came in and got some big outs, especially in the eighth inning. And Sanudo - outstanding."
The 5,528 fans in attendance gave closer Gonzalo Sanudo all the support he needed in the ninth, as he shut down the Monsters in order for his second save of the season.
"I think at this stage right now, with a couple weeks to go, we're in the hunt and we have to get as many games as we can. Tonight was big, especially after last night. I think [tonight] will pick up the team again and we can carry that forward."
Tri-City goes on the road to finish up the home-and-home series with the Vermont Lake Monsters before making the return trip back to "The Joe" on Friday. The ValleyCats will host the Staten Island Yankees for the first, and only, time this season. The first game of the series will start on Friday at 7 pm.
